𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 🌱 Pacific island countries continue to show global leadership in conserving the region’s unique biodiversity, with most of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) already aligned with the recently adopted Global Biodiversity Framework. A series of meetings recently concluded in Nadi, Fiji, that provided a valuable opportunity for collaboration and sharing of experiences to support the review and implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). The meetings examined Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework, with participants taking a more in-depth look at the support which can be accessed through the Early Action Support Project for NBSAP Revision. 🐠 Today ICRI convened a webinar for the ad hoc committee on integrating #coralreefs into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). 🐡 The interactive session provided an opportunity for ICRI members to learn more about the forthcoming release of the ICRI guidance document  to countries on how to integrate coral reefs and associated ecosystems (mangroves and seagrass beds) into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to help align them with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). This document was produced by the  ICRI ad hoc committee on coral reefs and NBSAPs. 🐟 The committee was established at the 37th ICRI General Meeting in September 2023, in response to coral reefs, and their associated ecosystems, not being explicitly referenced within the adopted GBF’s 4 goals and 23 targets. 💡🌱 How can integrating #KBAs into #NBSAPs help to deliver the GBF? The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was finalised in December 2022. Countries must now re-align their existing National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to reflect the mission, four goals and 23 targets of the GBF.  Conserving Key Biodiversity Areas is central to delivering the GBF’s overall ‘nature positive’ mission to take urgent action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. KBAs are useful for guiding countries in three main areas of the GBF:  𝗮. Identification of sites of importance for biodiversity to guide expansion of protected and conserved areas to 30% by 2030; 𝗯. Identification of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs); and  𝗰. National spatial planning. Discover more about how KBAs can be useful for NBSAPs 🌐

Biodiversity is high on our agenda. Our target is that 100% of our development projects need to implement a biodiversity action plan. The biodiversity action plan is prepared by a qualified ecologist after assessment of the characteristics of the local biodiversity. The purpose is to avoid and reduce all impacts of the project on the local nature, and to implement a list of recommendations. Congratulations to Dr Nakul Chettri.👏 ICIMOD Senior Biodiversity Specialist Nakul Chettri has been selected as one of the scoping experts for the Second Global Assessment of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the independent body on conservation and sustainable use of #biodiversity. IPBES’s Second Global Assessment of Biodiversity and #EcosystemServices is slated to be considered by its plenary in 2028. The International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) is celebrated every year on 22 May. The theme of IDB 2024, “Be part of the Plan”, is a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan which is the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. I am joining AEIAN and the rest of the world to know how you are being, or how you intend to be part of the Biodiversity Plan. The statutory biodiversity metric tools and guides have been published by Defra. This a huge step forward and great work nick white and everyone involved. The guidance has been updated throughout with information and examples about what biodiversity net gain means, how it is measured and how it can be achieved when it becomes mandatory. #bng #biodiversitynetgain #habitats #ecology #legislation
