I’d never worked in marketing before, but I once landed a job as a Marketing Communications Manager. My background spans internal, external, media, and change communications. When an agency approached me for a contract role, I decided to interview because I loved the brand and was curious about the opportunity. The interview went well, but there was a concern: I didn’t have a corporate marketing background (although I majored in PR and marketing at uni). My response? My skills in creating content and campaigns are transferable. A target audience is just that—an audience. Whether internal or external, the goal is to craft and deliver a compelling message for a key purpose. I got the job, and it was a fantastic experience. It made me an even better communicator. Don’t let your job title or CV limit you. Your skills are transferable. Hiring managers: recognise transferable skills and take a chance on great talent. They could be a really valuable addition to your team. I thank that manager for taking a chance on me! Apply for that role and have that conversation. You never know where it might lead. #decisionmaking #transferableskills #communications

This is fantastic because of your quick creative thinking process that tied these two experiences together. It is a learned skill and probably part gift but nonetheless a great way to expand our beliefs and thoughts around what we can do…limitless Katy Hetherington I hope this inspires a few others to think out of the box and go for something bigger or different🤜🏼🥇🤛🏻

I try to convey my transferable skills in my cover letter as I don’t want to lie on my resume. How do you suggest someone relays these transferable skills on a resume?

That is great advice and a great story. Just curious, do you have any insights on how you landed this interview? I think there are a lot of people who can do a great job of explaining how their skills could apply to a role, but getting in the door seems to be a big challenge much of the time. Thanks in advance!

Today, I just learned that after 6 months of being unemployed, I have maxed out on my unemployment benefits. There are no extensions available either. I am not sure how I will get by in the next few months. It's unbelievably scary to not know what the storm will bring with the thunder. My message to Recruiters and Hiring Managers, please do not discard resumes just because they only have 80% - 90% of the required skills or experience noted on your job vacancy. If the missing 20% can be learned on the job, consider making an exception. Many of us job seekers are experienced and are open to learning new skills and entering new industries. Embracing the opportunity to give someone a chance, even if they don't meet 100% of the job requirements, is a testament to professional goodwill and a step towards transforming today's job market dynamic. It's important to focus on a candidate's potential and capability rather than check boxes. This helps to foster innovation, diversity and growth in an organization. Talent Acquisition and Recruiters please push to redefine the hiring and interview process.

So true! Hiring processes have become very fixated on ticking all the requisite boxes and tend to forget about transferable skills and even soft skills, leaving very little room to give this type of opportunity that was so common a few years ago. I'd like to know if more automated processes and AI will increase this trend.

This is so inspiring! Thank you for sharing your story. I’m currently trying to pivot from customer support and cx to HR and people experience. It’s been tough but I’m not giving up!

I had experience with two employees graduated with a digital marketing degree. After four months of joining our company, we noticed that thier stregths lie more in HR department due to their great negotiations & administrative capabilities. However, we have not seen any significant positive outcomes when they were working in the field of digital marketing. Despite their acadmic background in marketing , they have never considered pursuing a career in HR. Therefore I can say that many employees have creativity that are far away or slightly far away from their academic interest. The importance of academic performance and academic fields has diminished significantly with creativity taking the lead! The question here : Will employers in the future consider creativity as the fundamental element in hiring process and ignore academic fields differences?
