There is great value in looking at things from an objective, and neutral perspective. One of the ways that I have done this for the past 20+ years is through looking at things symbolically. This is a very unconventional and untraditional way in which I consult to get to the root of the issues. In today’s Being In Sync 366 video, I am discussing how this can be done with the team or family and you can explore it for yourself. Assistant Professor at Heritage University, Assistant Director of PTAP, Co-Founder and Co-Chair of Conference on Intersectionality.
The major premises of Intersectionality is that requires us to look at all of the elements that make up who we are, recognize our privilege and oppression, while also considering them in the larger scheme of systems that we almost interact with. The below wheel is a visual representation of power and oppression. Come join the larger conversation on June 8! https://lnkd.in/gtqdB2Ur

Replacing Confederate monuments with statues of civil rights activists allows communities to correct the historical narrative by honoring those who fought for equality and justice rather than those who defended slavery and white supremacy. Confederate monuments were often erected during the Jim Crow era as symbols of resistance to racial equality, and their presence continues to perpetuate the legacy of racism and oppression. By replacing them with monuments to civil rights activists, society can celebrate the progress made towards justice and inspire future generations to continue that work. John Lewis symbolizes the ongoing struggle for civil rights and human dignity. Honoring him acknowledges the contributions of Black Americans and other marginalized groups in building the nation. Replacing Confederate monuments with those of civil rights leaders promotes healing and reconciliation. It sends a powerful message that the community is committed to moving forward, united by shared values of equality and justice rather than division and hate. This transformation of public spaces can help to create environments where all citizens feel respected and valued.

Recent findings from Art UK shed light on shifting trends in public sculpture. In 2023, more living individuals were commemorated than deceased ones, marking a significant departure from previous years. This shift, driven by a desire to celebrate diversity, underscores the evolving landscape of public art. However, amidst this progress, challenges persist. The dominance of statues portraying white men remains prevalent, reflecting deep-seated historical imbalances. Moreover, while there has been a commendable increase in the depiction of black individuals, the representation of other ethnic minorities lags behind. The recent instances of protesters, including those affiliated with Just Stop Oil, attacking artworks in museums and destroying cultural heritage, are deeply troubling. While the urgency and passion behind environmental and social causes are understandable, resorting to vandalism undermines the very essence of the values these movements seek to promote. Art, regardless of its form, serves as a universal language that transcends boundaries and connects people across time. Museums are the custodians of our shared heritage, preserving the narratives and expressions that define who we are as a society. Attacking these cultural treasures not only erases a part of our history but also jeopardizes the potential for constructive dialogue and understanding. Effective activism should strive for positive change through peaceful means, encouraging open conversations and collaboration. Destruction of artworks not only distracts from the core issues but also risks alienating potential allies. Let us champion our causes with respect for the diverse tapestry of our shared humanity, recognizing that cultural heritage is a bridge that unites us rather than a casualty in the struggle for change. #PreserveOurHeritage #CulturalRespect #PeacefulActivism
