"𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝘀?" ❓"𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗜 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺?" The problem isn’t your hiring process; “SlashData estimates the number of Rust developers to be 1/7 the size of the JavaScript community and less than 1/4 of the C/C++ community”. On top of that, of those that do have experience in Rust, only 5% have more than 3 years of it. So yeah, finding Rust developers is definitely a challenge. ❓"𝗦𝗼, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁?" 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. That's how we've been doing it for the last couple of years. Look for engineers experienced in other languages, people who know a fair bit about how a computer works, and who have an interest in Rust. Perhaps they are already using Rust outside of their current job. 💡𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀! 𝗢𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀. It’s these engineers who will be thrilled that you have an actual Rust job for them. After all, Rust is StackOverflow’s ‘Most Admired Language’ of 2023 and has been most loved for 8 years straight. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘁. Enable them to get started with Rust professionally. They’ll thank you for it. --- Want to talk about Rust? DM! #rust #rustacean #softwareengineering

Senior Rust/Golang Recruitment Consultant | Retired Professional Rugby Player - x.com/LlewelynJones1 Telegram - @llewelynjones
Most of the clients we partner with are looking for Rust and Golang talent at the moment. This is usually a hard requirement of at least two years in production. It's understandable why this is a hard requirement, as again most of our clients are looking for people urgently to hit the ground running, who don't need to hold hands. However, if you (a potential client or hiring manager) are using Rust or Golang and are open to speaking to people from different language backgrounds (Java, C++ etc), the talent on the market available now is beyond belief. If you can afford to be flexible with your requirements, now is a brilliant time to hire really intelligent people who (If had production experience) would probably be unattainable.

I had a pleasure to build a small project in C#, in last 3 days. Compared to Rust, it is much easier to write the code, but it is much harder to defend it. I am still shaking of a feeling that I didnt do anything right, in terms of safety and handling errors (exceptions). Of course there is a skill issue, but I can tell you that you need to think much, much harder then when using Rust. What is also scarry is that things work great for 10 times in a row, and then they brake, then work fine again... Is it memory problem, is it model mapping, dependency injection...? Anyways, enjoyable language to work with. Hope to get chance to work more with it. #C# #Rust #webdevelopment

I've been working with Rust at my day job since november last year. I was of course nervous at first, after all, even if I have played with the language, gone to conferences and used it in my spare time for many, many years before I had not used it "professionally". I was quickly half surprised that I actually knew how to write code in Rust. That doesn't mean that I think it is easy, there are ways to write rust that makes it very hard, and I knew how to avoid some of those: Don't be vain: while you can be fancy with lifetimes and references cloning and using owned values is often fine. I'm not writing a framework: things don't have to be generic in every dimension. Being overly fancy with generics, traits and trait bounds can often get one into trouble. Be careful what you _return_: when returning references lifetimes are tricky. This is very different from garbage collected languages and makes functional programming hard sometimes (unless you return owned values). My old testing patterns with test doubles sometimes get me into trouble: in order to be able to swap out parts of my code during testing I often reach for teaits and generics, it often makes things unnecessarily complicated "just for testing". I have a feeling that there are other patterns such as using #[cfg(test)] to make certain methods available only during test. I'm still struggling here. But overall I love coding in Rust, I love using Helix as my editor and yes: once my code compiles it often works the way I intended, and it is fast.
