Blue hydrogen – produced by splitting natural gas into hydrogen and CO2, then capturing, storing or utilising the carbon – is often referred to a “low carbon” option. However, according to Oil Change International, carbon capture technology is “the most expensive and least effective so-called solution to carbon pollution.” In a new scathing report, it warns that “government subsidies will only further entrench the fossil fuel industry and its impacts… boosting corporate profits and reversing progress on shifting public finance for dirty energy to pay for a just energy transition.” Governments such as the EU and Norway see blue hydrogen as a "bridge" solution while we build enough capacity to switch to green hydrogen, which is the lowest carbon solution. Meanwhile, nearly $29.8 billion of public funds have been spent or allocated to carbon capture and fossil hydrogen projects, many of which are yet to come online. Another partner on board our Baytown #hydrogen project. Air Liquide has agreed to build four large modular air separation units – key facilities in the production of low-carbon hydrogen.  The deal also enables distribution of our Baytown production through Air Liquide’s hydrogen network. It’s a win for both companies, and a win for the nascent market for low-carbon hydrogen. Partnerships like this – plus supportive, technology-neutral policies – are what’s needed to help hydrogen fulfill its potential to support climate and economic goals. https://lnkd.in/guUqY3_g #energytransition

By Charlie Currie So often in this industry we find ourselves discussing the decarbonisation potential of hydrogen and how it could repower polluting industry, transport and more But almost equally as often, one crucial aspect is avoided – the current production of hydrogen is a huge emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2). 900 million tonnes of CO2 emitted in 2022 could be linked to the unabated fossil fuel-based production of hydrogen1, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Over 100 million tonnes more than what aviation sector emitted in the same year2. https://lnkd.in/dgXbxwqn

Hydrogen production, distribution, and utilization continue growing, mainly fueled by environmental legislation and demand for cleaner fuels. Hydrogen can help global energy transformation and achieve our decarbonization targets.
