Our Agency opposes the proposed #CABudget cuts to critical services for foster youth. These cuts threaten to reverse positive strides made in recent years to increase stability/permanency for foster kids and prevent homelessness for current and former foster youth. Specifically, we urge our state leaders to safeguard the following programs: Family Urgent Response System, Housing for Foster Youth in Supervised Independent Living Placements, and Housing Navigation and Maintenance Program. #SFHSA #ProtectFURS

Here's my new buddy, LEO. This pup was a surprise co-panelist at last night’s Douglas County Live Town Hall. LEO is a new Senior Resource puppy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, and he'll be visiting communities and attending events for Older Adults around the County. I love this! Not only is LEO super sweet, but he impacts the people he meets--we know that even visiting with dogs can improve mood, reduce blood pressure, and encourage play! LEO was a fun surprise, but last night was really about connecting with Older Adults and caregivers. Over the past year, or so I've had the honor of being a part of the Older Adults initiative and tours, and last night, hundreds of residents joined the Live Town Hall to discuss some of the tour and survey results as well as the next steps for the initiative. At the Douglas County Housing Partnership (DCHP), we know that to achieve our mission, we must expand affordable housing opportunities and stability. During the tour and in a recent survey we learned Douglas County Older Adults agree! Again and again, affordable and accessible housing emerged as a top priority. Thanks to the Douglas County Commissions for their leadership and efforts related to this initiative and listening tour. During last night’s panel, I discussed the Housing Counseling programs DCHP offers to support housing stability and shared the four initial action steps determined by the Older Adults Initiative Executive Committee to address the housing needs for Older Adults in Douglas County, which include a local needs assessment, strategic planning, researching development standards that can lower costs (and lead to more housing development and opportunity), and developing design guidelines for consistent accessible housing standards. These action steps are just the beginning of improving housing stability, affordable opportunity, and accessibility. What steps are you taking to address housing needs for Older Adults in your community? #affordablehousing #olderadults #dogsoflinkedin #aginginplace

Addressing Homelessness in Milwaukee Milwaukee has seen a heartbreaking 17% increase in homelessness over the past two years. This alarming rise isn’t just a reflection of economic challenges—it directly contributes to increased criminal activity throughout our state. Research shows a strong correlation between higher rates of homelessness and a surge in violent crime, creating unsafe conditions for all of us. I recall one former MATC student who faced domestic violence but had no choice other than staying with her abuser because she couldn’t afford to live anywhere else. Thankfully, MATC was able to provide student housing as a temporary solution, but this situation serves as a painful reminder of the critical need for more permanent affordable housing and comprehensive support systems for those in crisis. The potential impact of addressing this issue is profound. Studies show that cities investing in housing-first programs experience significant reductions in violence—by as much as 30% in some cases. Imagine the transformation we could see in Milwaukee if we made similar investments in housing and community care. Over the past decade, I’ve witnessed the tragic effects of homelessness firsthand, including incidents involving unhoused individuals—often not Milwaukee Area Technical College students—seeking refuge in our college’s hallways. MATC has long been a place of support for anyone in need, whether a student or not. In addition to temporary housing solutions, we also offer an open-access food pantry that serves both students and community members, providing critical resources to those in need. However, this is not enough. As a city and a county, we must take more decisive action. Real change begins with education and civic engagement. I urge everyone to vote at both the local and national levels, attend town halls, engage with civic leaders, and partner with community service providers. We must advocate for policies that prioritize housing, dignity, and support over punitive measures, especially in marginalized communities. Together, we can address the systemic causes of homelessness and create a Milwaukee where everyone has access to safe, stable housing. #MilwaukeeHomelessness #HousingSolutions #CivicAction #MATC #CommunitySupport #EndHomelessness #Vote #HousingFirst

A housing strategy for vulnerable young people is a must do in BC.
We are grateful to The Vancouver Sun for publishing this Opinion piece today. We feel strongly and passionately that a strategy to address youth homelessness will change the face of our society. "Without a dedicated youth housing strategy, young people in care are being pulled down a path to homelessness and further into a cycle of life-altering crises — facing issues like problematic substance use, interactions with the criminal justice system, and even losing custody of their own children." - Jacqueline Dupuis and Sarah Stewart Please share this post as we head to the ballot box. https://lnkd.in/gQX4S_KX #HousinginBC #bcPoli #YouthHousing #YouthHousingStrategy #SocialPurposeHousing #BCElection #PRforGood #PRforSocialChange #SocialPurposePR
