Nationwide, there are more children living in homelessness than there are children in over half of US States. In King County, the 2024 PIT Count revealed that there are around 1,700 unhoused minors. They all deserve a safe place to sleep at night. National Alliance to End Homelessness https://lnkd.in/gHGzMmkZ

Nationwide, more children live in the state of homelessness than in most American states. This is why our work here at Safe Haven is more important than ever before. Last year we served 332 families, which included 758 children. Per data from the National Center for Homeless Education, the number of children experiencing homelessness during the 2021-2022 school year nationwide was greater than the total number of children in 28 states. Nearly 1.2 million children were either literally homeless (living in a shelter, or in unsheltered locations such as a car or tent) or doubled-up (sharing housing with friends or family beyond a unit’s designated capacity). Stereotypes surrounding homelessness often overshadow the diverse and complex realities faced by individuals and families. The stories of James and Judette remind us that no one is immune to homelessness, and many, like them, face this challenge with resilience, compassion, and transformative strength. After losing their baby son in 2018, James Eliscar and his wife almost became homeless due to overwhelming medical and funeral bills. This heartbreaking event inspired James to start a housing clinic for those facing eviction or foreclosure. What began as a community-driven initiative has evolved into Sarepta's housing pillar, empowering marginalized neighbors like Judette. After multiple evictions following her husband's sudden death, Judette found herself experiencing homelessness. Through legal aid and financial literacy workshops, Sarepta equips individuals like her to pursue homeownership and financial stability. Sarepta Women and Children Empowerment Center, one of our Community Action Grant winners, aims not only to address immediate needs but also systemic issues around housing insecurity. Join us in breaking stereotypes about homelessness and fostering a more empathetic society where every person's story is valued and respected. Criminalizing homelessness is not the answer. Read SchoolHouse Connection's full statement on City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson: https://lnkd.in/dfb6FtNC Today’s historic levels of homelessness represent a massive failure of public policy across multiple systems – including the homeless assistance system itself. Many homeless adults first experienced homelessness as children or youth, did not graduate from high school, and/or suffered various adverse events at the earliest stages of life. To truly stop the cycle of homelessness, we must expand our vision: policymakers and leaders must focus equal attention and resources on children, youth, and families: infants, toddlers, school-age children, young adults, expectant parents, and caregivers. Every person who experiences homelessness – from before birth through old age – deserves respect and dignity. We urge local leaders to reject criminalization and to instead embrace tailored solutions to prevent and address homelessness along the full continuum of life.

End homelessness in America. We believe ending homelessness in America begins with a sandwich. Our goal, beyond simply providing a PB&J sandwich to those in need, is to acknowledge and recognize the often overlooked homeless individuals and families in our community. When you see those experiencing homeless, one of the questions you may ask yourself is, “What more can I do?” We pray that what begins with a PB&J sandwich grows into much more for those who serve. In small ways, each of us can address homelessness in America. And together, we can end it. Our approach covers three initiatives to fulfill our vision: Educate Advocate Allocate Education represents increasing public awareness. Advocate is increasing support to not only host a PB&J Day, but to seek policy change and expanded community support to develop solutions. Allocate is the giving of our time, talent, and treasure (physical or monetary resources) to support PB&J Days and beyond. To learn more about how you can start a PB&J Day in your area or support us directly in San Antonio, please go to our website, pbandjdays.com. #food #SpreadKindness #pbandjdays #MakeADifference #help #service #homeless #endhomelessness

In recognizing the importance of safe and secure housing for children, it becomes critical to address homelessness and housing instability to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow and thrive. A safe and secure home environment is crucial for the well-being and success of children. A stable home provides a foundation for their physical, emotional, and cognitive development. By investing in organizations like TPCS that offer affordable housing initiatives and supportive services, we can create environments where children can reach their full potential and contribute to the strength of our communities, thus breaking the cycle of homelessness. #endhomelessness #essexcounty #homelessshelter

The Q Shelter platform explains that ‘ending homelessness’ essentially means a future experience of homelessness would be brief, rare, and non-recurring. It is the universally accepted definition of responsive and resilient housing systems that solve and prevent problems with a people-first approach. An increased focus on prevention is necessary in order to end homelessness long term, including ongoing and further investments in: 🙌 Support programs to help people sustain their tenancies 🏡 More Supportive Housing, in key locations, for people experiencing significant vulnerability 🙌 Prevention of children’s exposure to adverse experiences, a cause of complex homelessness in later life 🏡 Integrated support for families and children so that children and young people do not experience homelessness at a young age 🙌 Ensuring enough homes to meet population needs, inclusive of social and affordable homes. We believe there should be a greater focus and investment in prevention and early intervention to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place. A similar case being made in the back-end of this piece in The Courier-Mail today, as part of our State Election Platform launch, calling for a target to end homelessness before the 2032 Games. Check it out below. #Prevention #EarlyIntervention #Housing #Homelessness #MaintainMomemtum #HomeMatters #BetterTogether #Queensland
