Everybody has a different tolerance for risk. Whatever your tolerance, though, risk can always be mitigated. For instance, 80% of new businesses fail within the first five years -- pretty risky. Among franchise businesses, however, more than 80% are still going strong after 5 years -- some going REALLY strong. There's absolutely no risk, however, in learning more about going into business for yourself. Is being your own boss even right for you? If so, what kind of business would best leverage your background, skills, and interests? How much does all this cost, anyway? How much can I make? When it comes to your future, are you doing the impossible? Like Pooh, are you doing nothing every day? I get it. We all get caught up in the daily grind and with only 24 hours in a day, there's only so much we can do. But look around you. So many people are doing so much more. Don't compare yourselves to them, though. Compare yourself to YOU. Are you in the same place as you were last year at this time? There's nothing wrong with that. . . if that's what you want. I like this quote. . . but I couldn't disagree more. Herman Melville was a literary genius. For him originality was an artform and a virtue held above all others. But for the rest of us? Originality is great, but most of us are ordinary. That doesn't prevent us from succeeding, though. Leave out the originality and imitation parts of this quote and Melville is basically saying that is better to fail than to succeed. That's ridiculous. If you have some great idea for a better mousetrap, by all means, put it into production and take the world by storm. If not, however, look for a model to imitate. In the business world, consider franchising. You're literally PAYING to have access to a proven system that you can imitate and ride to success. Still don't know where to start? I can help.

I LOVE walking along the beach and watching the waves come in. The sand. . . the surf. . . the breeze. I find it all very relaxing. But I've never gone to the beach thinking about crossing the sea. Thankfully, other people have. Our country was settled by people who made an arduous journey across an ocean. Those first trips were risky and dangerous. Eventually, they became much safer and routine. Eventually, ships were replaced by airplanes and crossing the ocean in a plane has become commonplace. What shore are you standing on?
