Healing the Healers: Prioritizing Self-Care in Healthcare part 1
Have you ever lost a patient that you thought would have lived?? after CPR / Advanced resuscitation???
As healthcare professionals, we've all experienced trauma - both personal and professional. Our threshold for traumatic events varies, but the negative outcomes can be long-lasting and far-reaching, affecting us physically, psychologically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.
The consequences can be devastating: depression, anxiety, avoidance or hyper-vigilance in resuscitation, substance abuse, desensitization to death, compassion fatigue, and a changed worldview.
We are, indeed, the wounded healers.
So, how can we take care of ourselves in the midst of chaos?
Two crucial avenues for self-care are:
1. Formal and informal debriefs: Let's create safe spaces to process our experiences and emotions, fostering a culture of openness and support.
2. Intentional self-care: Develop a strong support system at home and work, take time to decompress, and engage in physical activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit.
Let's prioritize our well-being, so we can continue to heal and care for others with compassion and resilience.
