What does it mean to have a balance between your work life and your personal life? As ambitious individuals, it is easy to get caught up in everything we are focused on in our professional lives. We are full of ideas, and we often feel the need to implement them immediately. When we take on too much, or if we let our focus on our personal lives slip, that is when we start to feel overwhelmed. Things that can impact your work/life balance in a big way include family matters, longer working hours, and an increase in responsibilities either at home or at work. It is important to maintain some semblance of an equilibrium between our personal and work lives. While it may be difficult to maintain at times, there are numerous positive effects such as a minimized risk of burnout, a higher sense of wellbeing, and stress reduction. Maintaining this equilibrium is beneficial for both employee and employer, as workers who feel better in all aspects of their life are more likely to be positive and engaging in their place of work. You may not have an even split of your time between your work and personal life, but it is important to keep in mind the flexibility required to be productive at work while still taking time to do the things you enjoy. While there will never be a “perfect” solution, small changes can make a great impact on your wellbeing. #Forbes wrote an interesting article on this topic a few years back, and it remains relevant today. https://lnkd.in/g7XTNSPE #Rastegar #Balance #OfficeCulture #WorkLife #Wellness

Work-life balance is a phrase thrown around often, particularly among the younger generations such as millennials and Gen Zers. While ensuring you’re not consumed by work makes sense, Harvard Business School professor Ranjay Gulati believes that striving for an even balance between work and home life can be problematic. The two are intertwined, and attempting to separate them can lead to burnout and a lack of fulfillment in both areas. Do you agree? Finding continuity, compromise, and meaning in your work is recommended to create a harmonious blend of personal and professional fulfillment. #worklifebalance #workplaceculture #wellbeing #mentalhealth https://ow.ly/OqXt50QtatB

A 2022 Gallup report showed that 60% of workers are emotionally detached, with an additional 19% adding they were beyond miserable. This unrealistic idea of “balance” alludes to the notion that we can distribute our time and energy evenly between life and work, where we can achieve some unrealistic state of equality between the two. It just isn’t true or feasible. We don’t need to give ourselves one more thing to add to our “to-do” lists and try to balance two of the most unpredictable areas of life. We need support, flexibility, and time away to recharge and refocus on our professional and personal lives. Many organizations have gained positive results from offering flexible working hours, time off, and health and wellness programs. These initiatives have created productivity, innovation, and improved employee satisfaction. I’ve been saying this for a long time now - there is no such thing as work-life balance. We must learn how to integrate the two in manageable and beneficial ways. There is not one plan that can “fix” it for everyone. Each individual’s family is unique, their job situation is different. There is no universal answer for everyone. It’s up to us to find the pattern and rhythm that works best for our family and career. Find it, grow within it, and learn to enjoy each area of life that you get to call uniquely your own. #WorkLifeIntegration #PersonalGoals #TimeManagement

Can we end the "work/ life balance" debate? It's based on a faulty premise. Who decided "work" was the opposite of "life," and why have we given this false dichotomy so much oxygen? Don't get me wrong. I understand that work can be soul-sucking, but it doesn't have to be. And it shouldn't be. Work can be a place where you find purpose and connect with those around you, and work can be a vehicle that helps you achieve your dreams. Work is not always easy; there's tension and adversity, but there's also joy in pressing through that adversity and accomplishing something of substance with people you care about. If that's not "life," I don't know what is. Language matters. When we put work in opposition to life, we're priming people to not like work. We're signaling to them that something's wrong with searching for fulfillment through their job. We're letting them know that, for so many hours a day, they'll be trading time for money so that they can really live when they go home. I reject that premise. Going a step further, work can be more "life" than what the work/life balance advocates count as "life." As a society, we've given ourselves over to an attention economy; too often when we leave work, we're spending huge chunks of time staring into a black rectangle. We're doom-scrolling or binge-watching or swiping right for hours while the social media giants monetize our eyeballs, and the powers that be tap into our outrage. That's "life?" Watching old episodes of "How I Met Your Mother" while scrolling on our phone reading articles about the opposing political party as dress shoes we almost bought keep showing up in our feed? Quite the contrary. It's killing us. It's literally killing us. Loneliness and isolation increase a person's odds of having a heart attack by 29% and a stroke by 32%. We're lonelier than ever. One in seven men and one in ten women say they have no friends. People entering the workforce have never been more anxious or more depressed. And here we go telling them to trade time for money so they can… what?… go home to look at their friends' carefully curated lives on Instagram and feel "less than?" We should demand more from our work lives. If we're not finding purpose, if we're not feeling like a part of something bigger than ourselves, the answer isn't to "find more work/life balance." It's to find more meaning in our work. It's to recognize that work is a place where we can build social connections, find dignity, develop mastery, and get paid all at the same time. Instead of asking, Am I finding enough work/ life balance? Let's ask, Am I finding meaning in what I get to do every day? Am I fully alive at work? Can I be me? Is my voice heard? Do I care about the people around me? Do I make a difference? Work is a critical part of our lives; we should demand that it's a place where we feel truly alive.

Work-life-balance or Work-life-integration? A recent analysis by Glassdoor states that in 2024, the generation born between 1996 and 2010 (GenZ) is anticipated to overtake Baby Boomers in the full-time workforce. This generation has one highly common & vocal requisite in their professional endeavors: work-life balance. From Nyra Leadership Consulting's survey of over 1000 GenZ, we observed that 78% of respondents seek roles that allow them work-life balance flexibility. Why does GenZ seek work-life balance? - Having observed their senior generations glorify work fatigue, they have a deep faith in prioritizing their comfort. - They have been nurtured with the belief that they can achieve everything, and thus aim for the best of both worlds. - Mental health assumes greater significance than anything else & GenZ seeks timely breaks & off-work moments to rejuvenate. My opinion though remains, why should we consider work & life as two separate spheres? A successful work-life-integration leads to prioritization based on needs & allows a peaceful co-existence of work & personal life. In many of my interviews for my book on leadership & happiness, leaders across the globe have expressed their comfort & giving their best at work while also engaging in personal recreational activities. How does one attain work-life integration? - Treat matters based on their urgency, it is okay to take a client call after hours if their requirement is crucial. - Be open & flexible, discuss your needs with your team & align goals to suit everyone's needs. - Build a healthy rapport with your managers or team, which is based on mutual empathy. It is essential to value & respect both aspects of our lives while infusing them together. Finding the balance that motivates GenZ & its managers is certain to yield phenomenal results. Happy Friday! Work-life balance has always been an elusive beast and is a constant work in progress – especially for us working parents. 😉 I enjoyed this Q&A conversation with the Wall Street Journal’s “Work & Life” columnist Rachel Feintzeig: Pursuing Work-Life Balance in a Post-Pandemic World | Yale School of Management. Rachel talks with students at Yale about the state of work-life balance, trends she is seeing in the workplace, and the evolving shifts in the competing demands of work and home responsibilities post-pandemic. A few notable highlights: “It’s a different kind of ambition,” Rachel Feintzeig said. "They’re serious about their careers and building skills and making a difference…but they also want to be their best selves and kill it in their personal lives, too…" "Nowhere is this trend more prevalent than among working parents, especially women who continue to shoulder most of the childcare and home responsibility.” “Balance is hard for all working parents…” Here are three thoughts on balancing work and life commitments: (and I’d love to hear yours!) 1. Work-life balance looks different for everyone. As a leader, this means identifying what healthy work-life balance looks like for your teams and making adjustments as needed. 2. Work-life balance is cyclical and ever-changing. If there is one constant, it is change. There will be seasons in both your work and life where this balance will look different. Give yourself grace for the season you are in, and don’t forget to build in time for self-care to manage through those busy seasons! 3. Work-life balance is yours to define. By getting clear on your priorities, setting reasonable boundaries, and being intentional with your time, you can show up and do your best each day! I’d love to hear your thoughts! 😍 #worklifebalance #leadership #teams #workingparents Read/watch: https://lnkd.in/gtw-m8Hv

Striking the perfect mix of work & life in an integrated form is the key to unlocking greater career progression while enjoying your key moments. Being selective based on priorities & rationale rather than obstinate with terms yields no prosperity.
