In honor of #HispanicAndLatinxHeritageMonth, we’re celebrating Circana employees and allies on our social channels! This week, we’re spotlighting Evan Swidler.
Are there any traditions or customs from your culture that you particularly cherish?
As a member of the Jewish community, the most important theme for me is family and bringing together people we care most about to share in our life experiences — that might be formal milestones, celebration of holidays or even informal moments representing togetherness, connection and sharing of traditions. Equally as important, one of the things stressed in Judaism and we have influenced with our children is learning about other cultures, sharing traditions, and appreciating various customs, holidays and cultural dimensions. I believe there are many parallels and similarities within the Hispanic community and traditions I have experienced.
Can you share a favorite dish or recipe from your culture?
Our family always had a holiday tradition of making latkes (potato pancakes) from scratch, frying them up on the griddle and then topping them with homemade applesauce (some prefer sour cream). Similar to the many Hispanic cultural traditions, the theme of bringing family together, sharing delicious food around the table and experiencing “life moments” together is something I personally have always valued — and so often, it’s not about the food itself (although it doesn’t hurt if it’s delicious), but about the sharing of traditions and connection with those you care about.
