Fabulous to see continuing coverage of Batsheva Hay’s unconventional casting decision for New York Fashion Week. The designer chose to only cast models who were over the age of 40. You may be surprised and/or disappointed that this is causing a stir. But considering that the average age of a catwalk model is c23, with some as young as 16, this is a bold move. It’s a brilliant decision, when it comes to increasing representation and diversity in fashion - a world that shapes the expectations and aspirations of many. For too long, women in their mid and later lives have been made to feel invisible by the fashion and beauty industries - and by society at large. This decision is also commercially smart. Women in their 40s generally are earning more than women in their late teens and early twenties. They are more likely to have the means to become a customer, so it makes sense to cast models that make it easier to picture themselves in the clothes. Sometimes, this kind of decision can be criticised as being gimmicky or tokenistic. No cause for that here - the designer is herself a woman in her 40s, and recruited her models via agency but also by stopping beautiful women in their 40s out and about in New York. This show is a genuine expression of a desire for greater representation in the fashion industry. Deseri took a leap and launched a fashion brand that women #entrepreneurs like myself can use and feel elevated in. There are a million handbag brands out there, but very few are Black woman-owned and able to meet the mass market where they are.

The British Fashion Council has launched its first UK fashion diversity, equity and inclusion report in partnership with not-for-profit diversity advocacy organisations The Outsiders Perspective and Fashion Minority Report. Launched this morning at an event at London’s Barbican Centre, the report found that only 9% of executive and board roles in the UK fashion industry are held by people of colour, and only 39% by women. Only 11% of “power roles” – which the report defines as CEO, CFO, chairman and creative director – are held by people of colour, and only 24% by women. It found that while 86% of white men in the industry believe the industry is diverse, only 46% of women of colour believe the industry is diverse. As a Black American woman with dark skin, a wide nose, and natural hair, my journey through the fashion industry has been both challenging and enlightening. My unique perspective is shaped by navigating an industry that often glorifies Eurocentric beauty standards, leaving little room for true diversity and authenticity. I believe in advocating for real change in fashion... not just superficial inclusivity that fits into a social popularity contest, but genuine representation that celebrates all forms of beauty. Is What We Wear Ever MORE Important Than What We Say? When prepping for investor pitches this week Gemma S.asked for advice. She was looking for tips about how to best present the opportunity, her business and numbers. But what she got was fashion advice! 2 individuals, clearly stuck in the 1950’s, displayed their peacock fantails with these pearls of wisdom: 1. “Wear a suit, so they know you’re serious.” 2. “Stick on a nice frock.” Yep. You read that right. Gemma was allocating her time to discuss selling shares in her Company, Gut Wealth demonstrating the growth, value and returns that investing in it would deliver. I think that qualifies as serious. I like to think that times have changed, that we are moving forwards. Experiences like this remind me, and you, that we still have a way to go yet. Gentlemen, how would you respond if given this type of advice? Told to consider your suit because what IT says matters more than what YOU say. I spent 20 years wearing black trouser suits, glasses and hiding my flowing locks in a ponytail - to keep discussion and train of thought on the meeting subject matter. I have chilled a bit about that now. So I may be speaking for a number of women when I say: “What I choose to wear is my celebration of me.” The way we present ourselves matters. Of course it does. But more than what we say? Really? Maybe there is research on this? While I am happy to see different body shapes - I also feel disgusted ❌ We are back in Y2K since a while, and with ozempic pushing down body positivity we are also back with Victoria Secret’s runway show. As a woman who has witnessed heroin chic in the 00’s, I do not feel thrilled about the comeback of body dysmorphia🚩 I feel frightened that once again the fashion industry is dictating women on the kind of body we have to be in - to be accepted by our society. While I feel happy to see also more diversity on the runway with models like Ashley Graham and Paloma Elsesser - Victoria Secret is failing to deliver real inclusivity with sizing from only XXS - XXL. Social Media is flooded with consumers being sick Victoria Secret pretending to be inclusive, pretending to care about the consumer. With consumers calling the brand „dated“ „cheesy“ and „being in its flop era“.
