In the last few years, I've been repeatedly asked the same question, "how do my hospitality skills transfer to the professional world?" I think firstly, I would like to question why people thinking working in hospitality management is not the same, if not more challenging than working in the "professional" sector. Hospitality will teach an individual more skillsets in on year than you will ever learn in the professional world. Further, when I describe my daily roles as a hospitality manager, I am always met with the same response, "wow, we have about 3-5 people doing those roles." Again, hospitality will expand your mindset, teach you how to multitask for real, and teach you how to pivot faster than any other industry. So ask me again how my skills are transferable, because if you think about it, hiring one person from the hospitality sector, you just might get the work of about 3-5 people in one.

As someone who made a career change from hospitality to HR, this speaks to me. My transferable skills are a long list but a few highlights were/are: I hired; I fired; I ran payroll with tip calculations and meal break audits; I scheduled people that varied by staffing levels and skill level; I read rooms; I pick up on nuances at a table or bar seat; I have difficult conversations; I hold people accountable to standards; I set and communicate those standards; I coach people; I calm people; I am reasonable with people; I can zoom in to a tiny detail or situation; I zoom out to see the whole picture; I predict workflows; I master the knowledge of food and beverage required; I engage with a ton of people; I organize reservations like a Tetris game; I see the superpower in people and so much more to list. When looking for outstanding work and employees, take a look at Hospitality. If you can run a bar, dining room, or kitchen, it's amazing to see what else you can run. #hospitality #HR #modernHR #ProgressiveHR #skills
