As it’s National Apprenticeship Week, here’s my take… At 18 I turned down the offer to go to university to start a degree in Physiotherapy, something I had planned to do for 3 years. I took stock of my options, worked for a year and realised a commercial degree apprenticeship was the best path for me to take. An apprenticeship gave me more than just a degree. It’s given me confidence to face real life working challenges, communicate with people from all over the world and most importantly, stumble. An apprenticeship is like learning to walk in the real world. You’ll wobble, walk, wobble again and stumble; repeatedly. But a good employer won’t let you fail. You’ll work together, carve your early career together but and importantly, it’s still in your hands. Over 2 years after I’ve completed my apprenticeship, it isn’t the skills to complete a specific task that were my biggest take away; I learnt who I was, I’m confident on what I bring to the table and how to overcome stumbles for the rest of my career. There are a magnitude of options available for people when they leave school or even a career change many years later; you are in control, expand your horizons. And here’s the best bit and an apprenticeships USP…. you earn whilst you learn. They won’t highlight that but I’m buying a house off the back of it. #nationalapprenticeshipweek

Day 3 of apprenticeships is drawing to a close. Having been in three western states in 3 days, each state more rural than urban, it is abundantly clear that Pre-Apprenticeship and Registered Apprenticeships enable a pathway to not only earn while you learn, but also to be able to learn where you. Healthcare is a common industry no matter where you live. I want to highlight the great work that Mary Lyman and her team are leading in growing their own skilled workforce as part of Mesa View in rural Mesquite Nevada. Registered Apprenticeship has played a role in upskilling those who already have some patient facing healthcare experience. With her teams mentorship, and the apprentices' previous patient facing experience, they are rapidly attaining competence in their upskilled occupations. I can't wait to see them continue to ladder up. They are setting an amazing example for other systems to follow in building career ladders that include RAP as a significant part of the pathway.

Two vocational support schemes have been significantly updated to help people develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career. The Apprenticeship and Vocational Training Assistance (VTA) schemes both support local businesses to develop a future ready workforce for the Isle of Man. The Department of Education, Sport and Culture has worked alongside the Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce , University College Isle of Man and Isle of Man Skills Board to revamp the schemes that go live in April 👉 https://lnkd.in/eV8JtTss Julie Edge MHK, Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, said: ‘The revamped schemes should have a positive impact on individuals, businesses and the wider economy by providing access to opportunity for aspiring applicants.’ Apprenticeships - https://lnkd.in/gEurPAN VTA Scheme - https://lnkd.in/dTftf93 Or by emailing the Training Services team - training@gov.im.

Between the arrival and departure of National Apprenticeship Week, I challenged myself to come up with a list of reasons as to why students would take the traditional university route instead of an apprenticeship. Here’s what I came up with : - A degree is mandatory for the profession you are working towards (Law, Medicine etc) - The field you aspire to work in doesn’t offer a degree apprenticeship Now as you can see, that list is quite condensed, reflecting the difficulties I had with this task. But if anything, these obstacles reinforced my desire to chase an apprenticeship, a degree apprenticeship particularly. Year on year, degree apprenticeships have become more and more popular amongst school leavers since their introduction in 2015, and for good reason too! No debt, salary, job security (this often varies with the programme as a job at the end of the course is at always guaranteed). As an ambitious individual, the idea of being able to fast track my career by gaining experience while, essentially, being paid to study a degree is very attractive. What do you think? Is the traditional university route still plausible or will we see degree apprenticeships become more and more desired?

An interesting development for our current & future post-16 learners to consider for the future. Degree apprenticeships are a great route for those keen to mix earning & learning at Higher Education level.
We are delighted to have been awarded £1,234,378 by the Office for Students to support the development and expansion of degree apprenticeships. ⚙️👮 This was the largest amount awarded by the Office for Students in this second wave of investment, totalling £14 million across 32 universities and colleges. The funding will be used to address skills gaps in key shortage areas in our region and help raise the aspirations of people living here. It will support the delivery of new degree apprenticeships in project management, health, and social care and enable us to build and strengthen our engagement with potential apprentices and employers.
