The Isle of Man Public Record Office staged its eighth successful Heritage Open Days event in October. The annual open days give people an opportunity to go behind the scenes at the PRO, with guided tours of the stores and selected treasures from the collections. The team also curate a temporary exhibition for visitors to enjoy; in previous years, themes have included heritage railways, the Tynwald Millennium, and Ballamona Hospital. This year’s exhibition, titled "Grand Designs: A Century of Visions for the Isle of Man’, explored aspects of the Island’s built heritage. Outreach Officer Elizabeth Corlett commented, “With ‘Grand Designs’, we wanted to share landmarks we’ve lost, those which have endured, and those which exist only in the archives as the plans were never realised. They all tell their stories of changing times and fortunes. “Heritage Open Days are the biggest outreach event in our calendar. We welcomed many new faces and repeat visitors this year. It’s always wonderful to introduce people to the archives in our care and to show them what an invaluable resource they represent”.

An exciting conservation initiative between Visit Isle of Man and Monty Halls launched in the Isle of Man! The 'Big Blue Bag' aims to encourage locals and visitors of all ages to get involved and play their part in in protecting our marine environment. 🌏🌟
📢 Introducing...the 'Big Blue Bag' initiative 🌊 We're excited to announce a new partnership with renowned TV broadcaster and marine biologist, Monty Halls! Monty Halls, best known for his work in highlighting the importance of marine conservation and the wonders of the ocean, has become an official ambassador for Visit Isle of Man and will work closely with us to champion the Island’s natural beauty, rich marine ecosystems and UNESCO Biosphere status through his new initiative which is focused on marine conservation. The new initiative, the ‘Big Blue Bag’, has been designed to encourage individuals of all ages to directly engage with and contribute in a meaningful way to the conservation of the UK’s coasts and shallow seas. This partnership marks a significant step in furthering the Isle of Man’s reputation as a destination that values sustainability and environmental stewardship - with support from our partners at UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man and Manx Wildlife Trust. Commenting on the news, Monty said: ‘I am thrilled to become an ambassador for Visit Isle of Man. The Isle of Man holds a special place in my heart with its extraordinary coastlines and deep-rooted connection to the sea. As the world’s first entire nation UNESCO Biosphere, the Island’s commitment to balancing the needs of its communities, economy and environment aligns perfectly with my own values. It’s a place where conservation and sustainability are at the forefront, and I’m proud to be working alongside such a forward-thinking destination to promote the protection of our natural world. ‘The support of Visit Isle of Man, Biosphere Isle of Man and Manx Wildlife Trust has been instrumental in bringing this concept to life. The ‘Big Blue Bag’ initiative is about empowering individuals to engage with the marine environment and take simple yet effective steps to help protect it. We hope that through this partnership we can encourage other coastal communities around the UK to take ownership of their marine environment.’ The 'Big Blue Bag' will officially launch in Spring 2025 - learn more about it in the below promo video, or read our latest article: https://lnkd.in/erJcUymH #ExtraordinaryIsle #marineconservation #sustainabletourism
