Focus and Consistency I'm not an avid AFL fan, but I watched the Grand Final yesterday because a colleague, who’s a die-hard fan, got me interested. I also had the chance to attend a function at the Sydney Swans, where their GM shared insights into the club’s values and culture—very impressive! All week, the media was confident the Swans would win. No team had ever come from 5th position to win the flag, and Chris Fagan, Brisbane's coach, has never played at the highest level. At 62, he’s also the oldest coach in the league (never underestimate experience!). Yet, Brisbane took control from the first quarter and never looked back. As someone who works with many CEOs leading large teams, one thing I know for sure is that being crystal clear on your strategy and sticking to it is often a winning formula. How did a team like the Swans, who led all season, stumble at the final hurdle? Was it overconfidence? An organisational issue? Or did Brisbane simply execute their strategy better? Brisbane's win is a great reminder that focus and consistency are key, whether in sports or business.

Years of failure, false dawns and broken dreams is a familiar sensation for England football fans, who once again tasted disappointment on Sunday after losing to the more deserving winner Spain in the Euro 2024 final. It was also a reminder that some jobs are difficult to deliver because the weight of expectation combines with the obstacles to success. It takes a highly focused and talented leader, a sprinkle of good fortune and a team all pulling together in one direction to deliver in these circumstances. England’s national football manager is going that way: a high-profile role garlanded with many perks but which remains immune to success (there is now a vacancy following Gareth Southgate’s exit this week). Closer to home, there are perhaps parallels with the Lloyd’s CEO role and the battle to “modernise” the Lloyd’s/London market – a challenge taken up by almost every One Lime Street boss of the past 30 years. The Port Adelaide football club of the early 2000s was good, not great. It needed another edge. It brought in Damien Hardwick, old and in his last year, he provided limited minutes in the middle. But as a big-bodied midfielder, he provided a point of difference. Those minutes of experience were crucial to letting the younger players do their thing. Almost every company is built for the status quo. A group of full-time staff, able to deliver sales, production and reporting. But what if you know you need more, as Port Adelaide did, or worse, don't realise you need more? Increasingly, companies are moving to fractional CFOs and COOs. They don't manage the day-to-day, but they do move the dial inside the company, identifying areas to change and implementing that change. They are professionals; it's just that they work with a portfolio of companies, usually one or two days a week. Axant has access to a range of experienced CFOs and COOs who can be your Damien Hardwick, providing professionalism and experience to support your team to deliver more than they can themselves. Please reach out to me, and we can discuss your needs and how we can solve them.

Golf course properties are hot targets for investors — and prices are soaring After a turbulent period, country clubs and golf courses are attracting a wave of investors that previously targeted other industries. It's leading to a wave of sales, but what's driving the trend? After nearly a decade near industry lows, the resurgence of golf and its continuing popularity has once again pushed country clubs to the top of the list for people and companies itching to invest in different types of real estate. “I would tell you today that we have 66% more buyers in the market for golf assets than we had four years ago,” said Steven Ekovich, executive managing director and partner at Leisure Investment Properties Group, which helps buy and sell country clubs and other hospitality-related properties. “What has spurred that is the health of the golf industry.” Not every club has been able to make it through the demographic and financial gambit of the last decade. Thousands of clubs have closed since the Great Recession, with some former golf courses turned into developments or simply lying unused, the subject of intense community debate. But the industry has largely turned a corner... Dominic Solanke's tenure at AFC Bournemouth, spanning from January 2019 to August 2024, marked a period of significant growth and financial impact for both the player and the club. Development and Contributions at Bournemouth Solanke joined Bournemouth from Liverpool in January 2019 for a fee of £19 million. Initially, he faced challenges in finding the back of the net, but his persistence paid off. He scored his first Premier League goals for the Cherries in July 2020, netting twice in a 4–1 victory over Leicester City. 🏟️ 🏆 🥇 🥈 🥉 🎽 🟢 🔵 🔴 🟡 ⚫️ ⚪️ 🚩 🕴️ 🌍 Over time, Solanke became a pivotal figure in Bournemouth's attacking lineup. His standout season came in 2023–24, where he scored 19 league goals, setting a personal Premier League record. This performance was instrumental in Bournemouth's competitive campaign that season. Financial Impact and Transfer Details In August 2024, Tottenham Hotspur acquired Solanke for a club-record fee of £65 million, surpassing the previous record of £41 million received for Nathan Aké in 2020. This transfer provided Bournemouth with a substantial return on their initial investment, highlighting the financial efficacy of their commitment to Solanke's development. It's noteworthy that Liverpool benefited from this transfer due to a 20% sell-on clause on any profit made from Solanke's sale. **Contractual Terms and Clauses** Before his transfer, Solanke was under contract with Bournemouth until 2029, with a £65 million release clause applicable to certain clubs. This clause was effectively activated by Tottenham, leading to his move. Brand Value and Marketability Solanke's on-field performances and growing reputation enhanced his marketability, contributing positively to Bournemouth's brand value. While specific metrics on merchandise sales and fan engagement directly attributed to Solanke are not publicly available, his prominence likely boosted the club's visibility and appeal. **Conclusion** Dominic Solanke's journey with Bournemouth was marked by significant development, both for the player and the club. His eventual transfer to Tottenham not only provided a substantial financial return but also underscored the effectiveness of Bournemouth's investment in nurturing talent. His presence was undoubtedly beneficial for the club's immediate future, contributing to on-field successes and enhancing the club's market presence. ⚽️ 🥅 🏟️ 🏆 🥇 🥈 🥉 🎽 🟢 🔵 🔴 🟡 ⚫️ ⚪️ 🚩 🕴️ 🌍 💥 🥳 📣 💪 🙌 🎯 👟 🧤 #Football #Soccer #PremierLeague #FIFA #UEFA #Goal #ChampionsLeague #MatchDay #FootballFans #SoccerLife #FootballClub #TransferNews #TopScorer #FootballSkills #FootballIsLife #Goalkeeper #Striker #Teamwork #FootballPassion #FootyLove
