Great to see that this was resolved with the correct solution. The plan to move to UB during City's renovation was a no brainer that should never have been in doubt. It is disconcerting that some members of BCPS's school board threatened to stop this innovative solution. In it's 185-year history, City has served students from every corner of the city. BCPS proposed a swing space school at 5001 Sinclair Lane - as far east as you can go in the city without being in eastern Baltimore County. Getting there would have been difficult even for students with access to cars or parents who drive them to school. For the majority of students - who rely on MTA buses to get to school - the commuting times would have been unsustainable. For students coming from northwest, west, southwest, and south Baltimore the commute times would have been so difficult that they would have forced students to choose other high schools. Hundreds of academically talented Baltimore children - many from disadvantaged backgrounds - would have been denied access to a premier college prep high school and its renowned International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. BCPS's proposed swing school required $24 million dollars of upgrades to accommodate high school students; upgrades that would have little usefulness once City's renovation was complete. Thus, those improvements would have been an inefficient use of school construction funds and not at all in keeping with sustainable building practices. Such a relief that the sensible choice was made. CITY Forever!
I have a rising junior at Baltimore City College and have been close to this developing story. The collaboration of our anchor intuitions on this matter has been inspiring. The 3-year displacement of kids from the "Castle on the Hill" would be so much worse if there was not an attractive option for the kids in the interim and could have been devastating for the long term viability of the school. This is one of the best high schools in the State, and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute people, don't @ me on this, my other kids is a Poly kid and I love you too. https://lnkd.in/ejtqjVQs

September has arrived, and the doors of schools and educational institutions have opened! 🧐Parents start to think about the right school for their little treasures as children grow. ❓How do you choose the right school? This question comes up in almost every family at some point. Having gone through the school selection process twice, I believe that while overall ratings are essential, they aren’t the only factor to consider. The general atmosphere and learning rhythm shape a student’s personality. It’s critical that a child feels comfortable in their school environment, as this comfort will fuel their motivation and desire to learn. I would like to highlight a few schools in Etobicoke known for their stability, all located in good neighborhoods: 👉Sunnylea Junior School – Located in Sunnylea, serving grades K-5. 👉Lambton Kingsway Junior Middle School – Located in The Kingsway, serving grades K-8. 👉Humber Valley Village Junior Middle School – Located in Edenbridge-Humber Valley, serving grades K-8. 👉Norseman Junior Middle School – Located in Norseman Heights, serving grades K-8 (while its rating isn’t the highest and reviews vary on Google, I’ve mostly heard positive feedback. I also know students who attended this school and later successfully entered the nearby Art School, which is quite competitive. I’d love to hear your thoughts about the schools your children attend.
