As we step into February, it is important that we recognize Black History Month. Do you know the history of Black History Month? In 1926, Carter G. Woodson—the “Father of Black History”—pioneered the first Negro History Week. In 1976, the celebration expanded to include the entire month of February. Woodson believed that: 1. Blacks should be proud of their heritage 2. All Americans should understand Black history He hoped for a time when Black History Month would be unnecessary; a time when the heritage of Black Americans would be recognized by all Americans as an integral part of our history. But we’re not there yet. From the groundbreaking achievements of icons like Tina Turner, who defied all odds to become a legendary musician, to the historic presidency of Barack Obama, the first African American to hold the highest office in the United States, Black culture has consistently shaped, enriched, and inspired our society. This month, let's celebrate the incredible contributions of Black individuals throughout history and embrace the power of their stories. Sister Cities Project aligns with the growing number of voices who want to honor Black History and say, every February, that "Black History is American History". We honor, respect, consider and reflect on Black History in our work, year 'round. History influences where we are today with equality and indicates how much work there is still yet to do in creating a world where equality is the norm. Limiting the history we are exposed to, creates a blindness to our challenges. As an Ally, you can stay the course and continue to be open to learning about all Black history in order to address systemic systems that are barriers to equality. When Carter G. Woodson established Negro History week in 1926, he realized the importance of providing a theme to focus the attention of the public. The intention has never been to dictate or limit the exploration of the Black experience, but to bring to the public’s attention important developments that merit emphasis.
