Should I Focus on IT Management or Return to Sysadmin Roles? Answers: https://lnkd.in/gx36Qk7Y #CareerAdvice #ITManagement #TechJourney Hey everyone! 😊 I’m a 31-year-old guy from Italy, and I’ve been on quite the journey in the IT world. I kicked things off at 25 as a first-level Help Desk technician, armed only with my high school diploma. But I didn’t stop there—I taught myself a ton online, eventually snagging a sysadmin job. For the past year, I've been in a managerial role as an IT Support Specialist in a big company, which has been a fantastic experience, especially since I really enjoy management. However, I’ve hit a bit of a wall. My current situation isn’t allowing me to grow much in either IT or management. So now I find myself at a bit of a crossroads... Here’s what I’m pondering: Option 1: Invest in IT management skills Pros: Moving up in the management hierarchy could lead to exciting opportunities. It’s a path that could diversify my skill set. Cons: The IT management market feels saturated. As someone without a degree, it might be a tough climb. 😅 Option 2: Go back to sysadmin Pros: Getting back into the technical side could renew my ...

Systems Engineer & System Administrator | 7+ Years in IT Infrastructure & Network & Server Management | Cloud Services, Cybersecurity, and Automation | Philadelphia, PA
As a kid, I was the one everyone turned to when their computer wasn’t working. I didn’t mind spending hours figuring out how to fix things—whether it was reinstalling an OS or getting rid of a stubborn virus. What started as a hobby turned into a passion for technology, and that passion led me into the world of IT. 💻 My First Break: I remember landing my first job as a junior tech support specialist. It wasn’t glamorous, but I loved solving problems and learning something new every day. There’s a certain thrill in knowing that you can make a system work when no one else can. 🔧 The Turning Point: Fast forward a few years, I transitioned into system administration. This role felt like the perfect fit—maintaining networks, ensuring uptime, automating processes. It gave me the chance to not just fix things but prevent problems before they even occurred. I was finally able to combine my technical skills with strategic thinking, and I knew I had found my calling. 🌱 The Journey Continues: I’m still learning every day, whether it's staying up to date with the latest cloud technologies or finding new ways to optimize workflows. But what excites me the most is that no matter how much the industry changes, the core remains the same—using technology to make things work better. Looking back, the path wasn’t always straightforward, but every challenge I faced made me a better system admin. What’s your journey into IT? I’d love to hear how you got started and what keeps you motivated! #SysAdmin #ITJourney #TechPassion #CareerStory #Growth

Not only is it a beautiful sunny Friday morning, it's also the 25th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day! Shouting out sysadmins of all types today (cloud, telco, infra, network, core... the list goes on and on) for the work you do 24/7/365. I like to think of sysadmins *not* as the folks who "always say no" or are just there to perform the mundane tasks- but rather the folks who are the true Swiss Army knives of IT. Some days we're watching dashboards, some days we're under the hood troubleshooting 3rd party platforms, slugging it out with software vendors to provide feedback which could benefit their customer base, some days we're dabbling with #AI to create and test code snippets, etc. I'm sure everyone has a sysadmin who's continuously twisting and turning, getting the job done and trying to break through barriers! We are versatilists everyday. Instead, think of us as those striving to remain creative within budgets, innovative within boundaries and aiming to make things secure, stable and future facing among others. In the wake of last Friday's global events (Crowdstrike), take a minute to think about those folks affected who have been burning the candle at both ends relentlessly to get their workloads operational again, deal with 360 degrees of pressure and maintain their cool. As our tech landscapes and threat surfaces are ever evolving, as professionals we're aiming to do the same. If you have a favorite Admin or Support person in your Org, take a minute to give them a quick call or email and say "thanks!" I know who my #sysadmin pack is and appreciate them all for pushing us all to be better and years of service together. #SysAdminDay Mike Chabot Eric Szymojko Jack Costa Dave Lewis

Is It Time to Leave Your Comfort Zone for IT Growth Opportunities? Answers: https://lnkd.in/gc8z_B_9 #CareerGrowth #ITJobs #JobChange #StrugglingWithDecisions Hey everyone! 🎉 I’ve been working in IT for about 7 years now, mainly in helpdesk roles, and while I’ve loved learning (thanks to my company covering my A+, Net+, and Sec+ certifications), I’m starting to feel a bit stuck. 💼 I currently make a solid $70K, mostly just waiting for tickets to come in. Honestly, they’re pretty basic, and since we also work with a managed service provider (MSP), a lot of the challenging stuff goes to them. Initially, I was fine with this, but now I feel like I’m not growing or learning anything new, which is frustrating! 😩 At 42 years old, I know I still have so much to learn, but my current position doesn’t offer that opportunity. Recently, I received an offer from an MSP that matches my current salary, but there’s a catch: I’d have to commute 45 miles daily, which is quite a change from my current no-commute situation. So, here’s my dilemma: **Stay and enjoy** my comfortable, low-demand job and the salary that comes with it. 🏡 **Move on** and take...
