Just for thought this a good opportunity for context, this is precisely how participants often feel when seeking support services... mention NDIS and the prices often go ⬆️ Expected to "agree to signing a service agreement for a preset amount/assurity" before we even knowing if we want it. Imagine having to agree to prepay for 10 of these conferences not even knowing if they're any good what you be going to or you if you would even want to continue to go. You have to trust that they're charging you the right amount because rarely do participants see an invoice unless they absolutely insist on personally receiving one. and handing over you credit card too, allowing them to calculate and freely charge it as they calculate and see fits on a regular basis. = stressful, no flexibility, power imbalance, loss of choice, control and expected to "go with the flow" all while barely understanding what's even going on... thought it may offer a different perspective and possibly be helpful to help understand how it might feel if the shoe were on the other foot so to speak... #ndis #disabilitysupport

We are saddened to hear about the anticipated cuts in Birmingham, particularly affecting vulnerable children and families amidst a substantial shock of £112 million in planned reductions. These cuts will impact the city's youth service, early help services for families, and transportation for disabled and vulnerable children attending school or college. This comes at a time when the demand for youth services is escalating post-COVID and during the Cost of Living Crisis. Frontline organizations like The Muath Trust Official are facing an all-time high demand for critical services. THE WORLD AS I SEE IT    This is what happened in 2016...    A reputable NGO invited me to deliver a talk.     Their beneficiaries included several blind people from less financially privileged backgrounds.     Thus, the motive of the session was primarily to encourage and guide them on their journey.    I began with full mojo, suggesting they look at blindness as a strength and not a weakness.     I cited the innumerable ‘privileges’ given to us, for instance, seats being reserved in Metros and buses; as also being available to jump the queue at most places. 😀    However, I was stunned to get an instant pushback…    Many participants refuted my claims regarding reserved seats for the disabled in public transport, shouting ‘bolne pe bhi nahi utthe’ (the sighted people do not vacate our seats, even when asked).    I had a bitter realization through this incident.     My good financial background, good looks, education, and decent English-speaking skills, put me at an unfair advantage compared to many blind people.     Thus, while making an opinion about something I learnt that I should be conscious of my worldview.    What do you think? Things can surely only get better from this point ? This is when news isn’t news but remains news. And when that happens we have a big problem. Classrooms and mainstream teaching are not working for so many children now. Why we have been putting more and more money into a totally breaking system rather than focus on systemic reform leads me to conclude either no one cared ( which I don’t believe) or the data is so poor no one could predict this or believed this. And it seems the data is still not clear on future demand too and the knock on effects of systems failure at school are huge and complex. Someone very close to me with learning disabilities was traumatised by the school system that didn’t see his struggles for too long. This has had a permanent impact into adulthood where advocacy support isn’t there (more on the compelling evidence of the societal wide benefits of advocacy later). The NAO this week called for whole systems change and I agree. Social Finance and the teams are working on the Early Inclusion Collective led by Sara Jones, and with local authorities, led by Tom Davies. However, the FAFSA rollout has been complicated by multiple delays and missteps. For social care, it’s time for action, not words. Decades of underfunding and lack of action have left social care in a shocking state. Currently, at least 2.6m people go without the care they need. Yet when it works well, social care has a fantastic impact. It enables people to live the lives they choose: to socialise, work, and volunteer if they are working-aged disabled adults; sustain their independence if they are older; and balance caring with other aspects of their lives if they are unpaid carers. Politicians must act now to provide sustainable funding for care; remove charging for working-aged disabled adults; provide higher pay for care workers and more support for unpaid carers; and enable councils to reduce waiting lists for care assessments. Join us in asking party leaders to commit to prioritising social care reform in the next parliament. An update: Last week CRU and members of the National Alliance of Capacity Building Organisations (NACBO) learned our applications for individual capacity building funding were unsuccessful. Thank you for supporting our efforts to continue our capacity building work with people with disability and their families. If you haven’t already, please send a message to Ministers Shorten & Rishworth (link below). If you have, please keep spreading the word.   Apart from the immediate crisis, trying to work for long term change on this short-term funding simply doesn’t work.  If governments want high quality capacity building initiatives for all Australians, then forcing community organisations to compete against each other for funding is a risky strategy. Instead, they need to look at what helps people with disability and their families thrive and provide ongoing funding to ensure that can continue. https://lnkd.in/gVN6Rkwv
