It's midnight and I've just spent the last hour wandering around Hamad Airport in Qatar, taking in the sights (an actual rainforest!?) and window shopping in the watch boutiques. After a long 13 hrs, I’m heading to London to help open the new Time+Tide Watches retail locations and I've spent the entire journey so far thinking about the state of the established watch and luxury players. I’m thinking about how can we do it better. I'm lucky enough that I get to influence the decisions that will shape Time + Tide's retail philosophy moving forward and I wanted to share some things I've been thinking about. 1. We must influence the heart, not the wallet. Emotional engagement will beat sales tactics every time. My team is encouraged to connect with the customer personally, share their excitement and enthusiasm and forget about the sale. When you walk into the studio you should be treated like an old friend. 2. Where is the magic? When I worked in hotels, we would google people before they arrived to find out their preferences so we could make their stay special. Maybe their favourite bottle of wine in the room on arrival or a list of gluten-friendly restaurants if they had an intolerance. I used to overhear ‘How did they know!?’. It was a great feeling. How this translates to watches I’m not sure but it won’t be long until we find the magic. 3. The key metric is the enrichment of lives. This is a very Apple way of thinking but I think they’ve nailed it. How can we as a watch retailer make our customer's lives better? Perhaps it’s through community, education and cultivation of passion. If the customer leaves our studio happier and more fulfilled than when they arrived, we’ve done our job. Luxury bellwether LVMH 1Q24 revenues came in line with guidance last night, sparking a bit of a bounce in their and Richemont’s share prices.
