Reflecting on my time in the military, I recall the battalion commander during my first tour in Afghanistan gathering all the officers and saying, "Remember, when a Soldier is guarding a patch of dirt in the desert, it’s because of a plan, recommendation, or decision you made as a leader, echelons above them in the chain of command." He emphasized that our work is not merely for the sake of doing it, but that it should be carried out with intent, fervor, and an eye towards those who ultimately execute the tasks. As a young Lieutenant at the time, I took this to heart and maintained that perspective throughout my military career and continue to do so today. We cannot afford to adopt a "check the box" mentality. We owe it to the people on our teams to ensure there is a purpose behind everything we ask them to do. Maintaining motivation is critical, and context is key. As leaders, we must resist passing along tasks without conveying the vision behind them. Providing the 'why' helps your team internalize the goal and, in the absence of guidance, work towards the known objective. Across all U.S. military services, there is a significant recruitment and retention crisis. Despite percentage increases on both the active duty and reserve sides, women only make up approximately 17% of the entire active force – with an even smaller number making up leadership roles in the military’s hierarchical structure. Increasing female representation across the joint services and at every leadership level will increase the likelihood of success. Training environments need to be designed to be geared toward the female warfighter. Targeting their unique strengths and differences will attract more female recruits and reduce attrition rates overall. 🇫🇮 Reflecting on My Role as a Reserve Officer in the Finnish Military 🫡 As a reserve officer in the Puolustusvoimat - Försvarsmakten - Finnish Defence Forces, I have the privilege and responsibility of maintaining the skills and leadership qualities honed during my active service. This role goes beyond mere routine; it is a commitment to national security and readiness. Rehearsing regularly is crucial—not because of a fascination with weaponry, but because it is essential to ensure that, if called upon, I can lead effectively and responsibly. These rehearsals are about much more than tactical proficiency. They are about maintaining the discipline, strategic thinking, and teamwork skills that are vital in any high-stakes situation. I've said it several times before on this platform, Admiral Angus Topshee knows how to communicate.
