Here are four crucial pieces of advice from Hammer that you should take to heart: Forget Knowing Your Worth—Start Working on Your Worth Understanding your value is meaningless unless you demonstrate it. It's not enough to believe you are skilled and principled; you must actively showcase that you are skilled. Learn, contribute, and prove yourself. Friends in High Places Are a Perk; Friends Who Are Truth Tellers Are Essential While it’s nice to have influential friends, the ones who challenge you with honesty are invaluable. Seek out those who aren’t afraid to give it to you straight. Their candid feedback might sting, but it will ultimately make you better. Don’t Trust Your Gut—But Pay Attention to What It’s Telling You There’s no foolproof way to determine when to follow your instincts. Strive for a balance that combines intuition with facts. Success requires using both your head and your heart. Look outward and inward when making decisions—that's the secret. Sweat the Big Stuff, the Small Stuff, and All the Other Stuff The idea that you should only focus on the big picture and ignore the minutiae is misleading. Details matter. Small things can make a significant difference. If you overlook them, your achievements can unravel. Pay attention to the little things, make meaningful gestures, and invest some sweat equity. “I’m scared that if I speak positively about myself, others will think I’m arrogant,” is a phrase many women are familiar with. Thanks to unconscious gender bias, women often face criticism for being too ‘visible’ or ‘assertive’, especially when talking about their own accomplishments. But to get ahead in any career, it’s vital to be able to confidently articulate the value you bring. As Audra Jenkins, WeQual member and Global Chief Equity Officer at recruitment giant Randstad, says, “If you’re unseen, unheard, and unknown, then you’re unpromoted.” So, how, as a senior woman leader, can you better communicate your impact? Know your audience. Don’t be afraid to show up as a different version of your authentic self depending on your audience. Subtle nuances in the language you use with co-workers or team members vs clients and stakeholders make all the difference in helping others feel seen and heard. This, in turn, makes them more attentive to your presence and your message. Say ‘I’ not ‘We’. Don’t be afraid to own your accomplishments. Look at the difference between ‘After the team set the strategy, we spent three months road-testing it,’ and ‘I built the team, led on the strategy, and the team is now road-testing it.’ Be specific. As Krista Bourne, former Verizon Consumer Group COO, said in a recent WeQual Global event, women are often lauded for their soft skills rather than hard results. So own your scope, context and impact. Leverage networking. Use platforms like WeQual Global Membership, LinkedIn and other networks as a vehicle for vocalizing your achievements (and aspirations) and building on your professional network. Finesse your elevator pitch. Learn to concisely encapsulate the essence of your achievements and experience into a sentence or two that could be relayed on an elevator ride. There is a common theme that runs across all the high-performing women I work with: FEAR This fear shows up in many ways: - Fear of rejection from our professional circle if we take a job beneath our caliber - Fear of taking the wrong step in our career and falling behind our peers - Fear of disappointing our parents if we took the path less taken and fail - Fear of judgment from others if we lose our job - Fear of looking stupid if we ask an obvious question in meetings - Fear of losing money if we choose the wrong company to work for. I’m on the home stretch of my market research interviews, but still need ~20 volunteers. (before I get into it, know that this is NOT a sales pitch. It's genuine market research.) The program I’m designing will help businesswomen and executives go from being behind the brand to being known in their industry as a leader, being offered speaking gigs/book deals/promotions etc. by building their personal brand. My ideal interviewees are women in successful careers, who’ve climbed the ladder and/or are deeply respected in their fields. But they want more. They talk about wanting to write a book, or be a keynote speaker- and have a greater impact than just showing up to work every day.
