A small flurry of excitement in the business today having done our Grand National sweepstake. I think a 12/1 pick is potentially in with a shot, not so sure about the 80/1 pick though. 🏇🐎 It got us thinking, unlikely as it might seem, there are many similarities between the Grand National and precision engineering. In both of them, every detail matters, they both demand flawless execution, split second timing and unwavering focus. And most importantly, precision is absolutely essential! This week in Ghent we joined the high level dialogue on CAD which highlighted the policy side of CAD and also addressed what steps are needed to translate research findings into deployment and policymaking. Our Secretary General was present and shared insights about the developments in autonomous transport and in the physical and digital road infrastructure. It was stressed that a more cooperative approach between road infrastructure and vehicles is needed also due the issue of ageing road assets. The alignment on connectivity and automation activities should be focused on CEDR's safety vision zero and environmental objectives including those on transport efficiency and the protection of road infrastructure. In these regards, CAD is an important tool able to solve the existing challenges. All this is also strongly related to the CEDR Dublin Declaration which has highlighted the challenges of Europe’s ageing infrastructure, especially bridges, tunnels and structures needing refurbishment more than ever before. During the high level dialogue, a Declaration on CAD was approved and signed. The program covers the main aspects of a Railway system: from infrastructure design, to operation and maintenance. Thanks to funding from Federal Railroad Administration, our team has continued to consider novel ways to monitor track health leveraging novel 3D Laser Triangulation data from the Pavemetrics Systems Inc. LRAIL system. Our most recent paper on the topic led by RailTEC at Illinois Alum Ian Germoglio Barbosa, M.Sc. E.I.T. has just been published in the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part F: Journal of Rail and Rapid Transit.  The paper presents the development of Track Component Heath Indices (TCHIs) (i.e., quantitative values that objectively assess track condition and provide a means to monitor condition change with time and tonnage). The TCHIs rely on railway track mechanics, high axle load (HAL) railroad engineering practical judgment, and FRA regulations. Thanks to our industry partners involved BNSF Railway, Union Pacific Railroad, CSX as well as MxV Rail for additional field support. And finally, thanks to Arthur Lima and J.
