BUSINESS TALK: A name overhaul to rally customers and recuperate one's brand is not going to fix reputation. Strategist and senior corporate advisors advise companies that are in crisis management; a quick fix could lead to more damage to company reputation, brand equity and customer retention. "In an email, Graeme McQueen, the media relations manager at Dublin Airport, said a Starbucks location in Terminal 1 closed at the end of December when its contract ended. VERIFY also contacted Starbucks, and a spokesperson confirmed that that particular Starbucks location is now closed. “We regularly review our portfolio to ensure our stores are in places that are relevant for our customers while also maintaining healthy business growth. We can confirm the Starbucks store in Dublin Airport closed on 31st December when our lease expired,” the spokesperson said in a statement. Three Starbucks locations remain open in other areas of the airport. A new coffee company that’s local to the area will permanently move into the location in the spring, according to McQueen. He did not share the new company’s name. In the meantime, McQueen told VERIFY the new company has temporarily opened in the same location under the Vista Coffee brand name “to ensure passengers can continue to get their caffeine fix.” It is not affiliated with Starbucks, according to Dublin Airport. McQueen also addressed the claims that Starbucks is secretly running Vista Coffee under the new name because some Starbucks signage is still on display. He said the new company has “done a deal with the previous occupier to use their fixtures and fittings and for them to supply them with their products on a temporary basis.” “This change is part of a major overhaul of the food and beverage offerings in T1 and T2, which will happen over the coming months. This will see a number of units operate on a temporary basis — under generic brands — for short periods, while fit-out works are completed,” McQueen said. Additional details about these changes will be announced soon". I don't believe Starbucks will see a quick recovery, not in the near short- to medium-term as !sra3l is hellbent on committing more genocide. Disappointing as always #skcubratS.

Pub Chains. Like most 'chains' in Hospitality, once you get to a certain amount of 'units', it gets hard to control 'standards'. As an owner, having just a few places, you can probably get round them yourself and instill your own, exacting standards. When you have nearly 100 places, you can't do this and have to rely on 'other people'. If it's hard to get good 'other people', it's a problem. Also, if your offer was 'ahead of the game' decades ago, you find that smaller, more fleet-of-foot places, can soon catch up with you, or have a better, more fashionable offer, in 2024. Tastes change, quickly. Of course, there are VAST chains like Greene King and Wetherspoons that can ride the perfect storm of Brexit, ludicrously high power bills and lack of staff. They can cobble together finance packages of £squillions, as their THOUSANDS of places, in a vast property portfolio, allows them to do this. Quite often, like McDonald's, they're actually a Real Estate, not a Restaurant, proposition. However, amidst all these sort of 'good news' headlines, there are chains not doing as well, that won't be around much longer. Even consumate pros, like Jamie Oliver have demonstrated how hard it can be, to take your offer, to everywhere in the UK. You don't have to look very far, to see other 'chains', that were once omnipresent in the 'High Street', have completely disappeared. In spite of what people will tell you, and articles like this, allude to, it's NOT just a Glasgow problem. The unholy Trinity of: Expensive Power, No Staff and Pricy Product Raw Materials isn't something created just in Scotland. It's easy to blame Rates, Parking, Bin Collections, any number of local things but if you look at the ENTIRE Sector, all over the UK, it's only part of an increasingly complex balancing act. Pub and Restaurant Chains have ALWAYS come and gone, it's just that it's now a lot easier to aim REALLY high. Boom and Bust are a lot closer together.

With new films like Saltburn glamorising British pub culture, the latest Stella Artois’ X Palace pop-up collaboration and Martine Rose SS24 show taking place in a North London boozer - why is it that we seem to find pubs so charming? Other than sticky tables, pork scratchings and quenching pints, pubs are a quintessential part of British culture, a place of community and unity of all classes, ages and races, the pub is a place of meaning and belonging. From our perspective, pubs are synonymous with storytelling and a backdrop for brands, done authentically to foster connection. A staple of a nation’s culture over the last decade, the boozer has battled with the rise of experiential and trends towards drinking less. But its place has always remained, even if the attention may have waived.    With the UK’s foodie tastemakers (pardon the pun) such as TOPJAW LTD, now also including pubs in their reccos – like where to go for the perfect pint of Guinness, you have old haunts like the Bricklayer’s Arms in Shoreditch firmly back on the map. Plus with the ‘blokecore’ trend still hanging on for dear life, the classic boozer is always going to be the perfect backdrop to show off your boxfresh Wales Bonner Samba’s. And so in summary, pubs are seemingly back on the agenda - though for us they never really left. #culture #pubs #community

If you want to get a really good handle on what’s going on in the UK’s pubs from a business perspective, pull up a pint and settle into a corner of your favourite local to read this hum-dinger of a report from The Morning Advertiser on the Top 100 UK pubcos. And, yes, revealed as the top five largest owning groups are Stonegate Group, Greene King, Star Pubs , Mitchells & Butlers PLC and Admiral Taverns, but for me the really interesting detail of this report (aside from the cracking case studies) is what it tells us about growth (there is some), profitability (shaky at best), changing pubco operating models, innovation, changing consumer habits and the impact of legislation. Surprisingly, their main focus lies in a different domain altogether: Owning Land and Owning Property 🔥 While McDonald's iconic brand is globally recognised, it's their property holdings that truly underpin their business model and someone that for me mainly fascinates me Behind every Big Mac and Happy Meal lies a strategic investment in land and property ownership. So why does a fast-food giant prioritise Property over burgers? The answer lies in the stability and revenue streams it provides. By owning the land and properties on which their restaurants stand, McDonald's ensures a steady income stream through leasing arrangements with its franchisees. This unique approach has made them one of the largest and most successful real estate companies globally. Have you also noticed that regardless of where you visit a McDonald’s, the seating arrangement, layouts, and menus are virtually the same? It's a testament to their brand consistency and designed system that allows for seamless growth. What’s also more Interesting, the majority of the staff behind this multi-billion-pound empire are teenagers. Not only have they perfected the business model, but they also contribute to urban planning and economic growth. With a solid systemised plan that can be understood implemented and used in any country and language in the world!

With my 20 years of experience in F&B operations at Australian sporting venues and another 20 + years on, I know that you can take the person out of the industry but not the industry interest out of the person; that’s me. I note that labour cost management in the US is as critical as here in Australia. Their wages are less than $10 per hour, compared to our Australian wages of between $30 and $55 per hour, depending on the days worked. Labour is what Inzenius cares about. #ThatsInzenius #Payroll

The Devonshire pub in London's Soho is coming up to its first anniversary, and for those unaware, it has been nothing short of a sensation. It is often said that doing simple things well is incredibly hard. But the Devonshire does everything exceptionally. They claim to pull the best pint of Guinness in the UK and sell around 20,000 each week. In fact, they sell the most pints for a single outlet on the planet, including Dublin. This in a world where five pubs are closing every week in the UK. In an increasingly plant-based, alcohol-free society, The Devonshire shouldn’t work. But it really does, because just like the return of Oasis, the car-crash of Brexit / politics / pandemic / war, etc. has people yearning for a moment of easy pleasure and frankly no-strings-attached fun. And sometimes the old ways are the best. Especially when they are done by uber-fanatical minds that take the smallest detail and elevates it to the very best it can possibly be. I had lunch at The Devonshire the other day, (late to the party, but getting a table is a feat in itself) and it was nothing revolutionary, but also just brilliant. They do the elementary things superbly, and never without a good reason. Guinness, Steak, Pies, Prawn Cocktails, Stilton, Port, Sherry - the list goes on. Even restaurant royalty, Jeremy King – he of The Ivy and The Wolseley, agrees: "It has caught the imagination, and I think that’s because of the spirit that runs through it. And I think we underestimate how important the feeling is, as opposed to the components.” My point isn't really about The Devonshire though. Their philosophy works for any consumer facing brand. In the quest to chase the custom of GenZ, many companies have forgotten the consumer who pays the bills, what they actually want and how they want to feel. Sometimes a metaphorical sausage-on-a-stick (£2 behind the bar) and a pint is the way to a customer’s heart, rather than something more complex. The Devonshire formula is thoroughly old-fashioned. Except by taking forensic care about every part and building it from scratch, they've been able to create the perfect brand alchemy of epic product and genuine emotional connection. Anyone who runs a brand, and wants to do it well, irrelevant of which industry should read this article.
