Lisa is right that transition is an important rite of passage, and I find it interesting that schools can do it so differently. With that in mind, what do you like to see on transition day(s)? #inspireminds #learningaswelive
It was with great anticipation that we welcomed our 2025 Year 7s to their first orientation day today. Transition to high school is such an important rite of passage in a young person’s life and we see it as a privilege to lead them on this journey. We look forward to connecting at various points in the year as we welcome so many families into our beautiful community Kingswood College Melbourne. To the class of 2030, we are already so proud of you!!! #year7transition #learnaswelive #education #excellence #courage #perseverance #kindness #respect

📚 I recently wrote an article for #FGCU360 about the Lucas Center’s 10-year tradition of professional development book clubs at Florida Gulf Coast University. I've joined at least five of these clubs at #FGCU over the years so I know firsthand how they foster innovation, build community and challenge participants to explore new ideas. Here are three key takeaways from the article that can be applied to anyone looking to grow professionally: 1.) Step outside your comfort zone. Like Laura Frost, who took on a challenging topic outside her typical field, we grow the most when we embrace new ideas and experiences that push us to think differently. 2.) Engage in meaningful dialogue. Like Jackie Greene said, there's a kind of magic in workplace book clubs, where diverse perspectives are shared by participants from different academic backgrounds. Having open discussions with people from various disciplines enriches your own understanding and sparks innovation. 3.) Build a sense of community. Professional growth isn’t just about personal success — like Bill Reynolds said, it’s about fostering connections that support and inspire you. FGCU’s book clubs help faculty build lasting relationships and share knowledge that strengthens the entire campus. ✨ Consider starting or joining a workplace group where you can share knowledge and grow together. Picture this: my first job out of the gate was at the Nelson Mandela Institute for Rural School. Fresh off my stint as the first female President of the SRC at Fort Hare University, I was ready to dive into the world of innovative thinking with this stellar team. And oh, what a ride it was! Now, let me take you back to one unforgettable adventure. We were on a mission to visit schools in the rural heartland, and boy, did we encounter some wild scenes. Deep in the forests of Mqanduli, we stumbled upon a school that was, well, more of a jungle gym than an actual building. Prefab structures were the name of the game, but this particular one had a surprise in store: asbestos. Yes, you heard that right – the stuff of nightmares straight out of an Erin Brockovich flick. But wait, it gets better (or worse, depending on your perspective). As we cautiously ventured into the classrooms, we learned that the real danger wasn't just the asbestos – it was the snakes. Apparently, these slithery friends liked to cozy up in the insulation when things got toasty in the afternoons. Needless to say, our interviews were cut short as we high-tailed it out of there faster than you can say "snake charmer." Jokes aside, that experience sparked a fire in me to question the very foundation of our education system. Are we really equipping our kids with the tools they need to conquer the world? Are we making the most of our resources to ensure meaningful learning experiences? These are the questions that keep me up at night – and I'm betting I'm not alone. So, where are the leaders with the big ideas? Who's ready to shake things up and ensure that every child has access to quality education? The clock is ticking, and it's high time we start hearing some answers. Are you with me? 🔥 #BTWYRU #Voting #education #EducationRevolution #InnovativeLeadership #SnakesInSchools

Most of you know that I volunteer as the Vice Chair of the Board for the Horizons at The Foote School program in New Haven, CT which is an immersive academic and enrichment program serving over 160 New Haven Public Students (grades K-8 with a newer High School Mentorship Program to reach the 9-12 kiddos as well) each year with year-round programming that is anchored around its robust summer component. We are a largely privately funded program that provides this opportunity free of charge to families and if you are looking for ways to help advance equity in education, see our support page for ways you can help us with our work: https://lnkd.in/eFskdnb7 Today, I had the privilege of not only presenting but seeing the fruits of my organizing a special panel of friends for our “Career Day Chat” for the middle school class. With the help of my friends Elijah Hampton, James Williams, Willie Henriquez, and Jordan Blatche, among the five of us, we presented a multifaceted group of professionals who are business owners, musicians, real estate investors, accountants, serial entrepreneurs, correctional officers, and attorneys for career day. These gentlemen showed up in such a real way and listening to them speak I only became more inspired and grateful to have these guys in my circle. The tough middle school crowd loved them as we shared jokes and laughs and thoughtful and engaging follow-up questions. Such a special moment was shared today, and I’m just moved to have been able to witness it. So much was talked about but some of the messages we shared were: - “You are only as good as the company you keep.” - “Model what you need.” - “Mistakes will happen, but do your best to not make the mistakes that you can’t make a comeback from.” - “Ask for help and seek mentorship.” - “Make a covenant to be the best version of yourself that you can be.” - “There is more than one way to be successful. With that, school may not be the path for you, but all of us need to develop a game plan for success.” - “Shutup and work – not everything you must do you will like.” #TeamDestined4Greatness 🙌🏾

1moThese are some of Colorado's hardest working public educators. They're caring, and thoughtful, and kind with a stamina I cannot foresee ever being able to replicate. KIPP Colorado is the better for their service.
