As recruiters, we have a responsibility to stay vigilant. 𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭, 𝐈 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠! - 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐲: Always verify candidate identities. They're an essential tool to verify employment history and qualifications. - Get Savvy with Online Tools: There are online tools to help with everything from ID verification to plagiarism detection. The rapidly growing software company KnowBe4 was looking for an engineer and posted the job in the usual places. One promising candidate sent a resume. The hiring manager interviewed them, performed a background check, verified references, and subsequently hired the candidate. Standard stuff, right? Except this candidate was a fraud. The “remote worker” was sent a computer, which immediately, upon receipt, began to download malware. The worker turned out to be a rogue scammer emulating a US citizen. Because of that stolen identity, they passed all the checkpoints. Yikes! With remote work becoming more and more common, and companies scrambling to fill critical positions such as software engineer, the risk of hiring a scammer is higher than ever. As a recruiter at MS Capital, I obviously discourage clients from hiring this way based on my own selfish reasons, but even from an objective point of view, hiring remotely is risky. When you work with a recruiter, we do the vetting for you and tend to work within our networks of candidates, so there’s far less risk involved in your hiring.

There’s still a real problem in tech that’s tough to talk about but needs to be addressed.   Fake candidates.   It's been a problem for a very long time. But since Covid, and with the continuation of remote work, the number of fake candidates has skyrocketed.   We’re pretty good at catching it, but it’s an elaborate scheme that brings in a lot of money for the scammers globally who pull it off.   The level of deception is ridiculous.   Sometimes the person who shows up for the job isn’t the same person who showed up for the interview.   Other times, the “candidate” uses doctored immigration documents.   In my personal experience, I’ve found that Google can help you spot fake candidates majority of the time, but without proper training, some are sure to slip through the cracks.   The schemes change rapidly, so we do monthly training at Tier4 Group to stay on top of ways to spot them. And we've incorporated cutting edge tech into our process to assist our teams even further.
