𝗔: I have been greatly inspired by my Dad, who was a very successful builder here on the Coast and more recently, at 79 years of age, a judge for HIA Building Awards. Decades later his most iconic builds still stand proud on Minyama Island and Moffat Beach. Growing up here on the Coast and being surrounded by all aspects of the building trade has helped me understand construction and the intricacies of real estate. 𝗤: 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀? 𝗔: I long aspired to be an architect. When I was a kid I would draw hundreds of floorplans and bring the plans to life with Legos! Complete houses with internal walls and north facing pools! In my teens I did a summer internship with a local Architecture firm and a CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) course however somewhere along the way I changed paths. 𝗤: 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁? 𝗔: Helping people along their property journey. It is so rewarding when you successfully connect people with the property they have been searching for. I truly care about the outcomes of the clients. 𝗔: In many ways my real estate journey has only just begun! My goals from here are centred around connecting people with properties by recognising the needs of clients and collaborating with a knowledgeable and supportive team. Why is hands on, real-world experience so essential for students? Robb Berg, Principal of Design Workshop, highlights the importance of shaping the next generation of landscape architects through involvement outside the traditional classroom environment. There is often a gap between the theoretical approach taught in the classroom and the practical application on real projects. "Working for communities and with clients means understanding construction budgets, managing time constraints, navigating material limitations, and many more challenges, all the while trying to create meaningful and impactful work," says Robb. It is important to invest in this upcoming generation of young professionals, and Design Workshop’s Design Week and the Dr. Charles Fountain Internship Program are two examples of how we are providing practical experience for undergraduate and graduate students. Yesterday 12th January 2024, marked the end of our Fall 2023-24 semester, with the Final Jury being conducted for the 7th semester students. This semester's topic of design was a Commercial Bank's Head Office branch. Our instructors were expecting a modernist design approach from the students. For my concept, I integrated the use of Aluminium Facade blades into an overall concept of Biophilic Design that generally revolves around sustainability. Therefore, a major dominating feature of my facade design was the use of green screens or green walls, which I have always wanted to implement in my projects. Another preference that I opted for in this project was the use of Stucco Cladding, due to its durable and sustainable nature. This corporate-level project was a good opportunity for me to learn the use of materials as well as develop basic knowledge on how to develop basements in commercial projects while making them accessible for parking purposes. It also allowed me to learn the use of base-isolation systems to prevent damage to the super-structures, during earthquakes. I would like to thank the course instructors, Dr. Vedia Akansu and Dr. İPEK YARALIOĞLU, and our jury member, Dr. Osman Göztaşı for their valuable feedback and guidance during the semesters and both the midterm / final term juries. I would like to mention my gratitude to Mr Muhammad Yasin, who was my supervisor during my summer internship, in 2023. It was due to his efforts and guidance that I had the privilege of working on government-based projects, which allowed me to have my initial exposure to the usage of materials, as well as Curtain wall glazings. Are Degrees Overrated? How many people do you know who’ve never actually used their degree? We spend years at uni only to end up with massive debt and zero industry experience. I know, because I made the mistake of going to uni to study architecture, only to realise the one-size-fits-all approach wasn’t for me and I didn’t want to be an architect. I’m probably slightly (very) biased as chair of the employer group developing the UK’s first degree-equivalent Interior Designer Apprenticeship. But apprenticeships shouldn’t be seen as the ‘lesser’ option. They’re designed to give people real experience, a salary and no debt. By the end of the course, apprentices will have both the knowledge and hands-on experience they need to actually make a difference. Lee worked as a carpenter for 15 years before beginning his studies in Architecture. Carpentry's loss was our gain! We engage with several initiatives to allow people a route into the profession including: - T- Levels - Apprenticeships - HNC Part time Study - HND Part time Study - Degree Part time study/ day release Many of these options open the prospect of an architectural career to those who previously wouldn’t have considered a higher education route. If there ever comes a time when we can manipulate time (let's just ignore how that statement can mess with the mind for now), would I take up the opportunity to do so? The age gap in our team can be up to 2 decades (20 years!!). And obviously it will only increase with time. Typical generational cultural disconnects aside, our respective professional attitudes inevitably also differ. It can be a source of conflict, even though the field of work is clearly the same - in design or architecture. This is further complicated when you bring in another party - the client. How they engage with us, will inevitably also be a reflection of how their own generation deal with matters concerning professional work. It can be complex dynamic! I very often struggle with finding the balance. It seems simple enough: understand the client, understand my team tasked to that project, understand my own professional expectations as someone approaching my mid-40s, understand the whole consultant team. Then give up and dive in with eyes open. Maybe that's all that matters. Treat the passage of time as what it is - something that ceaselessly moves forward, taking us all along for a ride so long as we are mindful, and don't take the minutiae too seriously. In 2023 as a whole, I have learnt a lot. If I start listing them, it starts to sound like a brag. Updating my LinkedIn regularly would be a better idea than a year-end dump of all I've done. It started with an update of my portfolio, applying to different firms for my internship, interviewing and deciding the pros and cons of working in each firm. Volunteering and attending workshops at NIUA. Getting certified in software. Working with people in the industry and gaining a humanised perspective of the field of architecture. The last bit sounds funny but it's the most profound thing that I've come to realise. While studying all I saw were the buildings, bricks, RCC, services, sheets, and submissions. I never saw the people behind it all. Cursing the architects of the building we have to survey because the levelling of the staircases is weird *cough* Triveni Kala Sangam *cough*. That is something to be discussed some other time. The main takeaway is that the building isn't faulty because it's made by a man. To err is human. Rather the building is incomplete for the future to improve. In the end, i'll leave you with something funny that happens to everyone at some point, until the next post...
