Every year, nearly a million babies die worldwide within the first minute of birth because they are unable to take their first breath, and many others suffer lifelong complications. A large majority of these tragic outcomes occur in low-resource settings. But with proper training of birth attendants, and simple technology, they are preventable. Thanks to donations from people like you, we have been providing that training and equipment to birth attendants in the highlands of the Ecuadorian Andes. I don’t typically post on LinkedIn, but I’d like to share a little about myself beyond my day-to-day job. I’m a proud board member of Reproductive Transparency Now (RTN), a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to advancing reproductive justice by raising awareness about anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) through direct action, education, and advocacy. There are nearly 100 CPCs in Illinois and more than 2,500 nationwide. They are unregulated, unlicensed fake clinics hiding in plain sight. Their goal is to delay, discourage, and deceive people looking for reproductive care. They are not held to medical standards and are not bound by HIPAA. This is not healthcare. RTN recently launched a new public education campaign called “The Worst Festival of All Time.” It's festival season and CPCs are putting on the most enraging anti-abortion event. All day, every day. 4th-12th May is Cleft Lip and Palate Awareness Week Did you know that one in 700 babies is born with a cleft? That’s three every day in the UK! A cleft can happen in any pregnancy, even with no family history. It can have an impact on hearing, speaking, teeth, feeding and more. Many children born with a cleft go on to need extensive dental and orthodontic work, so keeping their teeth clean and healthy is extra important. Misconceptions around cleft lip and palate can make it hard for the people affected to get the support they need at difficult times. Evidence shows that babies are more likely to receive human milk and its benefits when their parents receive support from lactation professionals. We also know there is unequal access for those looking to become lactation professionals and the training necessary to support marginalized communities. There is a clear underrepresentation of Black, Indigenous, people of color, and LGBTQIA2S+ in the lactation profession which in turn limits families from those communities to access diverse support. Our initiatives include: Access - Care - Education Access is a key component to our mission. This includes community funding. Our Community Fund provides access to experienced birth and postpartum doulas and home birth midwives. In the wake of rulings that confine the scope of reproductive healthcare, the impact on women’s autonomy is profound. Restrictions on IVF not only limit a woman’s choice in family planning but also set a precedent that personal health decisions could be dictated by outdated interpretations of law.
