Excellent science, made in Europe: This year’s winner of the Körber European Science Prize, Erin Schuman, shares exciting insights on proteins, nerve cells, and the human brain. 🧠 ▶️Watch the video now! https://lnkd.in/d6za_cqc Erin Schuman is a pioneer in neurobiology. She discovered that and how proteins, as critical building blocks of the cells, are locally produced at the interfaces between neurons. Schuman’s newly discovered mechanism has revolutionised our understanding of the brain and opened up new avenues of research into serious brain disorders. “It truly is an awesome feat that individual brain cell can process a thousand or more different streams of information independently,” says Schuman, who is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt, Germany. She will receive the Körber European Science Prize in Hamburg on 20 September. 🎥Want to learn more about the brain and its synapses? I’ve always had a stark interest in neuroscience and understanding the working of the human brain. Along with studying the course of clinical and molecular neurobiology this semester, I also completed my 5 week internship at Dr. Sibylle Jablonka's Lab. In this duration, I witnessed a lot of new things like dissection of mouse embryos , its spinal cord and motor neurons, culturing of neurons and HEK cells , genotyping of nmd mouse lines and also performed techniques like immunostaining. Really looking forward to explore the realms of this field in depth and learn new techniques on the way! 🧠 #neuroscience #humanbrain #spinalmuscularatrophy

Engineered ‘cat parasite’ helps deliver drugs to brain. Researchers from Tel Aviv University recently discovered a method to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and to deliver neurological treatment to the human brain using an engineered version of Toxoplasma gondii, commonly known as “the cat parasite.” This study was led by Prof. Oded Rechavi from TAU’s Department of Neurobiology and Sagol School of Neuroscience. The study was conducted in collaboration with Rechavi’s PhD student Shahar Bracha, and Prof. Lilach Sheiner from The University of Glasgow. Link to the full article attached bellow. What do I do as a Research Assistant? 🕵🏻♀️🧠🤔🔬 Let me give you a glimpse! Here’s an electron microscopy image from a hamster’s brain, specifically focusing on the motor cortex. One of the long-standing mysteries in neuroscience is how animals enter torpor, a state of reduced metabolism, and how their brains regulate this process. We’re particularly intrigued by what happens within the brain during this state. How does the brain orchestrate such complex changes and maintain control during metabolic suppression? Our research focuses on the synaptic structures during and after torpor. We’re investigating how these synapses change, whether there are regenerative processes at play, and how neural networks adapt. By understanding these mechanisms, we may unlock new insights into treating neurodegenerative diseases. Stay tuned for more updates if you’re curious about di/regenerative neuroscience! #Neuroscience #TorporResearch #SynapticPlasticity #Neuroregeneration #NeurodegenerativeDiseases #ElectronMicroscopy #RegenerativeMedicine #CortexResearch #Neurobiology #AnimalModels #SynapseResearch #NeuralNetworks #BrainScience #ScientificResearch
