Approximately 2.5 crore women in India want to delay or stop childbearing but aren’t using contraception due to various barriers. Plus, 33% of married women aren’t using any form of contraception, which can lead to unintended pregnancies and related issues. On top of that, 73% of Indian women leave their jobs after giving birth, and nearly half of those who return leave within four months. At WOHLA, we've had great success in helping women achieve financial independence and economic stability. Now, we're excited to add healthcare to the mix. So in the space of one month, we may be seeing the NHS unfairly acting against trans children and youth by depriving them of essential treatment AND regressing to segregation by demanding trans people are confined to separate rooms. This is medical apartheid and absolutely should not be tolerated by a forward thinking society. The fact of the matter is that there is no reason to segregate trans people in this way. There have been NO complaints to warrant this, and there are NO SUBSTANTIATED RISKS to cisgendered women or trans men. This is more ideological nonsense. How many cis male gynaecologists and obstetricians are going to be told that they can't see female patients. What's next? Being told where to sit on a bus? Separate schools? We are breathing life into bigotry and bias that we should be moving away from. After women it was black people, after black people it was LGB people, after LGB people it is trans people....who will it be next?

As per the WHO Report, the most appropriate method of birth control depends on an individual’s overall health, age, frequency of sexual activity, number of sexual partners, desire to have children in the future, and family history of certain diseases. Ensuring access for all people to their preferred contraceptive methods advances several human rights including the right to life and liberty, freedom of opinion, expression and choice, and the right to work and education, as well as bringing significant health and other benefits. The proportion of women of reproductive age (aged 15–49 years) who have their need for family planning satisfied with modern methods is 77.5% globally in 2022, an increase of 10 percentage points since 1990 (67%). Reasons for this slow increase include limited choice of methods; limited access to services, particularly among young, poorer, and unmarried people; fear or experience of side-effects; cultural or religious opposition; poor quality of available services; users’ and providers’ bias against some methods; and gender-based barriers to accessing services. We see this powerful impact time and again in the work of our Youth Sexual Health Program: ✨When young people receive and have access to inclusive, medically-accurate, and age-appropriate education from trained educators (including peer educators!), they not only feel more comfortable and safe in their classrooms; they lead healthier and happier lives.✨ This is especially true for #TransYouth and young people with marginalized identities who are traditionally not centered in #SexEd. And yet, there are over 400 bills pending in state legislatures across the United States that would ban health care for trans minors, ban trans women and girls from sports, ban trans people from restrooms, and ban schools and school staff from educating about history. 💡  Youth Ki Awaaz and MTV Nishedh have been collaborating to reveal the dismal state of contraceptive knowledge in India. These are some of the concerning stats that we came across are these- 👉 Around 6% of the Indian population is affected by STIs.  👉 71% of youth (between 13-30 years) living in 17 states said that they hadn’t been taught about sexuality by teachers nor by parents. 👉 A study conducted in six Indian states found that only 24% of sexually active unmarried young people used any form of contraception during their last sexual intercourse. One of the root causes is that people are simply not aware enough about the issues at hand. The stigma and stereotypes around contraceptive usage only amplifies the problem. ➡ Youth Ki Awaaz and MTV are trying to combat this by using polls to understand the reality of contraceptive usage in India and create wider awareness about it to break your silence on contraceptives. Take the polls and spread the word. It was #WorldContraceptionDay on 2️⃣ 6️⃣ September. We at 3ie believe that the right to #sexual and #reproductive well-being forms a tenet of #humanrights, yet challenges to achieving equitable sexual and reproductive health and rights (#SRHR) persist, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (L&MICs). Some of these challenges are starkly reflected in high rates of gender-based violence (#GBV), preventable maternal deaths during labor and childbirth, unsafe #abortions, and #childmarriage. SRHR programs and policies can be powerful catalysts to empower individuals, address harmful gender norms, and improve service availability and quality. However, the evidence base on the effects of such SRHR interventions in L&MICs remains fragmented by topic or population. A comprehensive mapping of the available evidence is a critical step towards consolidating knowledge of programs that aim to strengthen SRHR in L&MICs. On this #worldcontraceptionday, we would like your attention on our latest #EvidenceGapMap that includes over 1,000 studies on SRHR programs across the world and includes studies for people in challenging situations such as conflict or experiencing vulnerability in exercising rights or availing services. In this map, we find that there are clear Evidence Gaps around key SRHR areas. There is a significant gap in evidence for outcomes related to measures of harmful practices, such as trafficking, female genital cutting, and child, early and forced marriage, which disproportionately affect adolescent girls, outcomes on the legislative environment, international norms and registration.
