“Origins” is a Cascade PBS docuseries project that collaborates with PNW and Canadian filmmaking communities. They’re currently looking for stories told from a PNW insider’s perspective: stories grounded in ancestry, connection, culture, influence, and rootedness. Every year, through an online submission process, the Cascade PBS Original Productions team will select a project and award $40,000 to go toward producing a five-part short form docuseries. The key requirement is that the filmmaker needs to be part of the community they are documenting (Indigenous stories told by Indigenous filmmakers, Latinx stories told by Latinx filmmakers, etc.). Submissions are now open for the next season of “Origins" at crosscut.com/origins.

AXS Film Fund was founded to support documentary filmmakers and non-fiction new media creators of color with disabilities. 2020 very clearly brought about the need for compassion and serious change. Between violence targeted at people of color, a fearful divided nation, and the global pandemic, it is more important now than ever to raise and support a body of more culturally diverse voices. The AXS Film Fund Seeks to: >>Award creators, who identify as a person of color living with a disability(ies), in documentary filmmaking and nonfiction new media a one-time grant that will aid them in completing their projects. >>Help more ethnic minorities living with disabilities get recognition and job opportunities in the film industry. >>Help create more diversity amongst creators and the stories told. Funding Information: Each year they award up to five creators with grants of up to $10,000 each to assist them in finishing their projects in any stage of production. Types of Projects The AXS Film Fund is a one-time grant for creators of color in documentary filmmaking or nonfiction new media, who identify as living with a disability. They will fund: >>Feature length documentary films, preferably led by a person of color who identifies as living with a disability. >>Nonfiction new media projects, preferably led by a person of color who identifies as living with a disability. What I love dearly about playing tennis is the connections I make all over the world with people in the tennis world and Adrian has such a unique vision to basically do a Soho House of tennis (all the special access to unique tennis experiences and meeting eclectic people from all over the world). It's not easy to execute a vision like the one Adrian Calvert is realizing because, well, tennis is quite a peculiar and insular world even though it is the most popular international sport that we watch and participate in (who hasn't at least grabbed a racket and hit a ball or two or gone to the grand slams or Indian Wells or has a kid playing tennis or use tennis life lessons (process over outcome). I've been expanding my exploration of The Nugget from Joan Scheckel's Joan Scheckel Filmmaking Labs and The Technique in my storytelling and the core of what it is I was able to really explore in London yesterday at the Moth StorySlam where I saw firsthand how telling a feeling-based story to an audience truly resonates (we call this Reclaiming the Loop) and then the next day, chatting with Adrian about his All Court Tennis company about what his nugget is. Deeply enjoying exploring the storytelling craft in so many forms. PS: Be careful who you associate with when you're seeking filmmaking collaborators -go under the hood a bit (this includes going under the hood about me) you can really see who's an artisan and who is just an expert of their digital facade. Anyone can say I'm a "screenwriter" or I'm a "producer" etc all it takes is to type those words, pursue a few endorsements and make a connection with a few people on here as if they have actually worked with the connection but really, people these days are very very good at curating the perfect digital profile. A lot of it is just Wizard of Oz behind the digital curtain.

I absolutely loved working on this project (PM/Lead Researcher). It's about the Circumpolar Arctic Indigenous Audiovisual Sector in Canada and beyond. The Executive Summary has now been published and announced at this years international film festival in Berlin - Berlinalie! https://lnkd.in/ee2ejd3C The study covered five key focus areas: 1. Current pattern and spread of audiovisual activity across the region 2. Existing support infrastructure for Arctic Indigenous audiovisual creators, including key gaps 3. Key limiting factors hindering Arctic Indigenous audiovisual creators from developing creatively and commercially 4. Opportunities (regional, national, and international) available to the Arctic Indigenous audiovisual sector 5. Interventions required to overcome challenges and connect the sector to current and future opportunities.
