My first adventure into upcycling and retrofitting. In this instance I took my mountain bike and, after a thorough clean, and with the support of many YouTube guides, transformed it into an e-mountain bike. At a fraction of the cost of a brand new ebike, this offered an affordable solution to step into the world of e-transport. As a disclaimer, if I were to do it again, I would take my bicycle and give it to a professional to install for the sake of having a warranty and to save the time taken to undo several obvious mistakes in hindsight. We’ve packed a lot into 2023 and so, as it heads towards its conclusion, it’s good to reflect on what has been a year of achievement and progress. Firstly, we’ve gotten a lot bigger, expanding into major cities such as Birmingham, Leeds and Brighton as well as increasing the size of many of our existing schemes. With that growth came innovation, as we became the first UK operator to deliver e-cargo bikes as part of an integrated scheme when launching them alongside our bikes and e-bikes in Hereford. Our growth has allowed us to have an even greater impact on reducing congestion, getting people more active and improving air quality. We’re approaching five million sustainable journeys, a huge chunk of which have directly replaced private vehicle trips and prevented nearly six hundred tonnes of carbon emissions. We’ve tightened up our own sustainability practises, achieving the ISO 14001 environmental management standard and releasing our inaugural Impact Report. Our experience and expertise are forged by listening to our riders and, during the summer, we spoke to over 3000 of them to better understand the motivations and barriers to using our services. Released earlier this month, our fourth annual Rider Report unveiled a wealth of interesting and crucial information that will help us to further build on our success into 2024 and beyond. To mark World #CarFreeDay – today – #Beryl, one of the UK’s leading micromobility companies, are teaming up with councils to incentivise peolpe to get on a bike. World Car-Free Day is championed in the #UK by transport charity Living Streets, which suggests ways you can help support this year’s campaign, and transform your street into a place for seating, cycle parking or cycle lanes, gardens, play areas or art areas. Beryl CEO and co-founder Phil Ellis said: ‘World Car-Free Day is a great opportunity to re-imagine our streets and focus them around people and a healthier environment. The offers, which have been launched in partnership with local authorities, are designed to encourage people to get involved in the far-reaching initiative and develop more sustainable transport habits. In #Norwich, from today until Sunday, free, 30 minute rides will be available for all the Beryl bikes, e-bikes and scooters in the area. In #Plymouth riders will enjoy two free rides of one hours each during the course of today. These must be separate journeys. In #Watford there will be free rides today, capped at 30 minutes on an e-bike and one hour on a pedal bike. In all other areas when Beryl operate (except Leeds) there will be 20% off minute bundles/passes during today. Beryl’s current average modal shift from private vehicles (based on the total kilometres replaced) is 34.68%. This means that over one third of the total journeys that their schemes generate have replaced those undertaken in a car, taxi, van or motorbike, either as a driver or a passenger. Their research also shows that: If you switch from a car to an #ebike, you decrease your emissions by 55.73% If you switch from a car to an #escooter, you decrease your emissions by 74.57% If you switch from a car to a #bicycle, you decrease your emissions by 83.73% Phil Ellis said: ‘There is some alarming scientific evidence around the detrimental impact of car usage, both in terms of people’s physical #health and the #environment. ‘Our bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters are not just a great way to help decarbonise urban transport systems, they’re also a proven way for people to get fitter and more active. ‘They can also save users a fair bit of money compared to private vehicle ownership, removing the costs associated with fuel, tax, MOT, insurance, parking, storage and maintenance.’

🚲 Chinmay, Daniel, Stephen and I just returned from our first EUROBIKE Show - the energy at the show (with its 35,000 attendees!) made me even more excited about the future of the bike industry and Ridepanda's place within it. I loved seeing the innovation in the product space, with beautiful new bikes (thanks for the myStromer AG and Brompton Bicycle product tours Tomi and James 🚲) from countless vendors, the bike insurance space (thanks for teaching us about Laka, Aide 🛡️), bike shipping and logistics (amazing product at circular logistics, Christian! 📦), and tracking solutions (great products Ludovic at Connected Cycle and Jakob at Copenhagen Trackers ApS 📶), ebike resale solutions (enjoyed hearing about all your progress Toussaint at Upway! ♻️), and the huge success of employer-sponsored bike leasing schemes in Germany similar to what we're building at Ridepanda in the US. We’re thrilled to bring our learnings back to the US and integrate them into our work at Ridepanda. Of course I had some FOMO after the show - not enough time to have all the conversations, ride all the demos, see all the products, or attend all the presentations. But I left with a sense of vast momentum within the bike industry to increase adoption and onboard new riders with amazing services and form factors. Fourth edition of OTD newsletter went out yesterday and following are the topics that we covered: 👉 95k vehicles and Profitable - South Korea based SWING generated $35.7m in revenue (up 125%) with $1.7m Net Profit - They've been profitable from 2020. 👉 Update on Bird's Chapter 11 filing - Bird reported $161.4m in revenue in 2023 till 19th December 2023, much less than their 2022 full year revenue ($244.6m) - Bird has defaulted on paying the first instalment of $2.4m to TIER Mobility as part of the SPIN deal - Bird had just $3.2m in cash at the filing 👉 Financials of Beryl Bikes (2022) - UK based Beryl Bikes generated £5.1m in revenue in 2022 and posted a loss before tax of £4.7m - They had 2.1k vehicles and their scooters did 2.8 rides per day each 👉 Financials of nextbike by TIER (2021) - In 2021, Tier mobility owned Nextbike generated €35.1m in revenue and posted a net loss of €6.5m. - In 2020, their revenue was €25.9m and net loss was €10.3m At the end of 2021, Nextbike had €1.5m in cash.
