Check out my first blog post for Canopie :)
As #MinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth comes to a close, it is crucial to elevate the experiences and insights of BIPOC mental health professionals. Their voices highlight the unique challenges and opportunities that creating a more inclusive and supportive mental health landscape provides. In conversations with three of our Canopie providers -- Dr. Aretha Hampton, PhD, LCSW, Dr. Akilah Reynolds, PHD, and Gloria Lopez, LMHC -- we dive into the changes they wish to see in healthcare, the importance of representation, and their personal journeys in self-care and mental health. These dedicated voices remind us that the mental health of BIPOC folks is not just a personal issue, but a community one. Let’s continue working toward a future where everyone has access to compassionate, culturally attuned mental health care! Check out the link to the full blog post in the comments!

To truly advance mental health intervention and treatment, we must confront and dismantle all forms of stigma. • Public stigma, which shapes societal attitudes, often erects barriers to seeking help due to fear of judgment. • Internalized stigma can erode self-esteem and discourage individuals from acknowledging their struggles or accessing care. • Institutional stigma, embedded in policies and practices, can limit resources and support for mental health initiatives. Overcoming these stigmas requires a multifaceted approach: 1. Educating the public to foster understanding and empathy, 2. Empowering individuals to reject negative self-perceptions 3. Reforming institutions to provide equitable, stigma-free mental health services. Only by addressing stigma in all its forms can we create an environment where mental health is prioritized and effectively treated, allowing individuals to seek and receive the help they need without fear or shame. #DiscoverYourLight #MentalHealth #EndTheStigma #Empowerment #HealthcareEquality

Understanding the nuances of mental health interventions is crucial, especially when addressing the diverse needs of Youth and Young Adults of Color. 👇🏾 Research consistently underscores the effectiveness of culturally tailored mental health interventions in improving outcomes within this demographic. By incorporating culturally sensitive approaches, practitioners can establish a more meaningful connection with their clients, fostering trust and enhancing the therapeutic process. This is even more important when we consider the fact that 42% of Youth of Color reported exposure to at least one source of racial trauma, such as interactions with police, teachers and employers. Essentially, adults in positions of authority. Advocating for and implementing diversity in mental health support is a huge part of what we do here at The AAKOMA Project. It is paramount to ensuring that every individual, irrespective of their cultural background, receives the tailored care they require. #CulturalCompetence #MentalHealthInterventions

May is #MentalHealthAwareness month and this week’s focus is on the unique challenges, strengths, and contexts that affect mental health in people from racial and ethnic minority groups. Everyone deserves access to respectful and culturally appropriate care yet members of racial and ethnic minority groups experience challenges that may require unique mental health support. Cultural differences should be respected and celebrated when providing mental health support. Mental health care providers are encouraged to consider the cultural nuances and needs of the diverse communities they serve. Addressing and reducing barriers to treatment are the first steps to building more equitable health systems. Together, we can improve access to mental health care for people from racial and ethnic minority groups! #MHAM2024 #MentalHealthMatters Find resources here: https://loom.ly/qGhH28s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

There is (rightly) a lot of talk and posts about mental health this month. It is Mental Health Awareness month. There is much talk of individual care. Self care. But what of communal care? Expecting folks, especially survivors, to invest in their mental and physical health individually, without systemic support, is akin to gaslighting folks into believing they’re not doing enough, not smart enough, not invested enough in themselves. Mental health is - housing security - food security - legal security - social security - economic security Mental health is -affordable healthcare -universal childcare -maternal and reproductive healthcare Mental health is individual care wrapped in loving communal care, held up by just and equitable economic, political and social frameworks. Watered deep by generational care. #mentalhealthawareness #reframewellness #systemicwellness
