“This is where we get our food. Why wouldn’t we try to protect it and bring it back to what it was?” Guardians are on the front lines observing more invasive species in their traditional territories, and it’s a growing cause for concern. Invasive species have the potential to outcompete and devastate entire ecosystems if not properly mitigated. Watch & learn from T’Sou-ke Nation Marine Team and the Imaryuk Monitors as they share a glimpse into some of the hands-on action taking place against invasive species on their traditional territories. Guardians are unique to each nation because each program is designed to empower and build capacity for youth to grow their connections to land and ultimately build strong and resilient nations for many generations to come. The Kuskokwim River, vital for subsistence salmon harvests in Alaska, has faced severe declines in salmon populations since 2009, impacting 33 subsistence-dependent Tribes. This crisis threatens food security, cultural, spiritual, and economic well-being. To tackle this, the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (KRITFC), University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Tamamta Program, and Ocean Conservancy (OC) are hosting workshops and interviews with Indigenous Knowledge holders. These sessions aim to include Indigenous Knowledge with modern science, highlight the strengths of Indigenous co-stewardship, and recommend equitable solutions for federal marine fishery management. The outcomes will be shared widely to inform and enhance salmon restoration efforts in the Kuskokwim region. https://lnkd.in/ehBuhdGM

Wetlands contribute immensely to the lives of people and animals, as well as to planet Earth. They are very significant for the environment. Every year, World Wetlands Day is observed to raise awareness for the importance of wetlands for human lives and the planet.
