“The prestige, the burden, the loneliness of command” reflected Captain MacWhirr in Joseph Conrad’s Typoon, as he sailed (under a new ‘steam powered’ vessel) in the calmness before the storm. We as leaders have too often enjoyed the prestige without fully understanding the burden side of command.
But as history shows us, the people who hold the solution are often the people perceived as causing the problem. Never have we had a bigger onus to be inclusive in planning our future. Those who are sometimes perceived as the villans, are the ones that control the capital, resources and skills to actually make the change happen. There is no magic switch to ‘turn down’ the planet. There is no magic solution to change the way we live. We, mankind (not the planet), have decades, if not centuries of challenges ahead of us.
As I observe the rhetoric of COP28, we seem to be pitching one side against the other. The Greens versus The Fossils. The Rich versus The Poor. The Global North versus the South. Being on the outside is lonely, as Conrad reflected, as it creates resentment and often dysfunctional behaviour, on both sides.
Sustainability leadership requires us to think long term. Not quarter by quarter or even 5 year plans. Remember, it’s been 66 million years since the dinosaurs walked the planet. Though I’m not quite 66 years old yet, I can’t even begin to imagine having to live my live one million times over to get back to the dinosaurs. (That is a lot of tax returns).
As leaders, it is time to stand up, embrace the burden and be counted. Not to point out who is to blame in the past. Not to find solutions for today. But to set the right environment for all the players to play their own part in implementing sustainable solutions that are inclusive and just for all.
While Conrad penned ‘Typhoon’ in 1899, I wonder did he ever ponder what the future rising seas had in store? Two hundred years later it will be 2099. RCP 6.0, (which seem quite challenging at this time) is predicting our sea levels, all our sea levels, to rise 600mm (two feet) by then. If our descendants are lucky enough to be only up to their knees in water, will they have learned all the lessons of the past?
The burden is on us to get our ship in order now? Or, like Captain MacWhirr, we will be heading into yet another Typhoon (Hurricane if you are in the Atlantic) whose frequency and ferocity have become more and more destructive overseen by decades of intellectual bickering and poor leadership.
Modern leaders by default must be sustainable. Leadership requires up to be brave and bold, but it also requires up to be inclusive in our problem solving. It requires us to embrace the prestige as well as the burden that is bestowed upon us
