The built environment shapes communities, both literally and figuratively. But when the community is left out of the design process, it can create solutions that are ineffective or unintentionally cause harm. Instead, bringing the community along as co-creators—helping shape the vision for the places and spaces where they spend their lives—lays the groundwork for a successful, inclusive design process.      Here, NBBJ Principal Megha Parekh Sinha, AICP details five steps to ensure community-focused outcomes: first, establish motivations by asking questions at the onset of the design process. I liked this simple resource for my equity-centred design class at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. This article (2022) by Julius Tapper, entitled "All for one, not one for all: the power of equity-centered design", asks the following question: How do you build compelling and inclusive experiences that lead to more equitable outcomes? By understanding that invitations are as important as insights to the design process. Learn how equity-centered design can create stronger outcomes that benefit everyone. I love the simplicity of including: (Re) designed thinking (Re) invigorating collaboration (Re) considered genius Along with the key principles: 🔓 Acknowledge your lens and mitigate the impact of your biases. 🔓 Respect the history that came before you. 🔓 Center lived experiences. 🔓 Operate with humility, empathy, and continuous learning. 🔓 Design with diverse co-creators at the table. 🔓 Build community capacity. 🔓 Situate the solution within an ecosystem.
