Since the mid-2000s, the agro-food sector has contributed to 10% of the #Dominican Republic’s GDP. Additionally, food processing is the largest and fastest-growing manufacturing sector in the country. 🥭🫑❌ However, fruit and vegetable exports to Europe are frequently banned. This is due to exceeding Maximum Residue Limits and other issues like traceability, value chain weaknesses, and lack of knowledge about EU sanitary and phytosanitary requirements. Small food-processing firms also face challenges accessing international markets because of uncertified safety management systems. To address these challenges, DT Global is providing Technical Assistance for the Implementation of Food Safety Management Systems for 10 companies in the Dominican Republic. Funded by the European Commission, the project aims to help these companies achieve better access to the EU and CARIFORUM markets (the latter being comprised of the 15 Caribbean Community states, along with the Dominican Republic). 🇪🇺🤝🇩🇴 🔍 The project objectives include analyzing deficiencies, creating an implementation plan for each company, and conducting specialized training to ensure compliance with required standards. #TechnicalAssistance #HealthSecurity #EUMarket #IWork4DTGlobal #WeAreDTGlobal

My latest publication at The Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington highlights Qatar's food security efforts and the environmental challenges it faces. While Qatar's achievements in local food production could serve as a model for other countries, it remains uncertain whether these efforts will be sufficient in the face of rising temperatures and falling aquifer levels. Nevertheless, such initiatives are critical for addressing the environmental challenges that pose serious threats to long-term food security in the region.

This week, global leaders gathered in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, at the IFC - International Finance Corporation's 11th International Food Safety Forum. The focus on 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲, 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗔 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 couldn't be more timely. The recent Food Waste Index Report 2024 underscores the critical need to address food waste and its far-reaching impacts. In 2022 alone, 1.05 billion tonnes of food were wasted globally, significantly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbating food insecurity. The Forums's discussions on robust food safety strategies and food waste reduction for sustainable growth resonate with the findings of the Food Waste Index Report 2024 and the objectives of the FSSC 22000 Additional Scheme Requirement on Food Loss and Waste (FLW). All emphasize the importance of reducing FLW, enhancing sustainability, and maximizing the production of safe and nutritious food worldwide. In #Africa, adopting #foodsafety standards is crucial for meeting regional and international #market requirements while reducing costs associated with food loss and waste. IFC - International Finance Corporation, through its Food Safety Advisory program, helps businesses improve their processes and enhance their global competitiveness. From May 13 to 17, IFC hosted a workshop on food safety awareness and food loss prevention in Dakar, bringing together key agrifood companies and industry experts. Together, we explored the critical importance of food safety for public health, economic growth, and sustainable development in Senegal's agribusiness sector. Participants delved into the "IFC Food Safety Handbook," gaining practical insights to establish robust food safety systems. "IFC’s personalized support includes food safety assessments, food loss estimates, staff training, and guidance on obtaining international certification, " said Nouma Dione, Senior Country Head for Senegal and the Gambia at IFC, during the opening of the training. "Enhancing food safety has helped our clients meet regional and export market demands, attract over $611 million in investments, generate over $728 million in increased sales, achieve more than $3 million in cost savings, and strengthen their brands." IFC remains committed to supporting Senegal's sustainable development through strategic investments, technical assistance, and capacity-building initiatives, particularly in agribusiness. 🌍 Navigating Diverse Food Safety and Packaging Regulations Across Africa 🌍 Africa's approach to food safety and packaging is as diverse as its countries, each with its own regulatory framework. However, common principles and ongoing efforts aim to harmonize standards across the continent, promising a streamlined future for trade and safety. The various bodies ensure food safety and packaging integrity by: 1️⃣ Setting Standards: Setting strict criteria for contaminants, additives and processing to ensure food quality. 2️⃣ Regulating Packaging: Providing guidance on the use of materials to prevent contamination and ensure product safety. 3️⃣ Enforcing Compliance: Through inspections, audits and tests, these agencies ensure adherence to regulations, issuing penalties on those who fail to comply. 4️⃣ Facilitating Trade: By aligning with international standards such as the Codex Alimentarius, they reduce trade barriers and enhance the flow of safe food products.
