Flexibility is key within plant breeding ♻ While keeping pollen and pollinators out is crucial in your breeding projects, other properties also matter. Flexibility in your pollination control products 👇 💪 Sometimes the material needs to be ridged so the bag holds itself open away from delicate flowers ➰ Whereas sometimes you need softer material, so you can tie it tightly around the delicate stem of a plant. We know that no two crops are alike, crops have diverse needs, which is why we specialise in manufacturing a whole range of non-woven materials to meet the needs of plant breeders. What makes a sunflower variety🌻 attractive to bees 🐝? Pollinators are crucial for a good fecundation and high yields in sunflower cultivation, as the pollen is not spread by the wind and self-pollination alone is not sufficient to realize the full yield potential. Our breeders therefore want to ensure that KWS sunflower varieties are frequently visited by both honeybees and bumblebees. At our breeding station in Kozármisleny, Hungary, plants from the KWS breeding programs are regularly evaluated to see how attractive they are to the insects. As more frequent visits have a positive impact on yields, bee friendly sunflowers do not only contribute to #biodiversity, but are also beneficial for farmers. Learn more about the project from sunflower breeder Kristóf Poór 👇 #LetsTalkBreeding #seedingthefuture #TimeForKWSsunflower

The varieties that KWS has developed as part of a breeding program specifically designed for this purpose can either be harvested very early with the usual grain moisture or at the conventional harvesting time with a very low moisture content (~ 20 percent). #Insiders #SustainableAg KWS Group https://hubs.li/Q02hxmdy0

Seasonal, temporary wetlands embedded in cropland are vital to the production of ducks. 🦆 These shallow wetlands act as pair ponds at the onset of the breeding season and drive carrying capacity for ducks and countless other species by providing a source of easily accessible nutrition as they settle on the prairies each spring. Given that 90 percent of duck production occurs on private land, Delta Waterfowl believes that working with landowners is the key to addressing large-scale habitat challenges on the breeding grounds. Delta has researched and pioneered a voluntary, incentive-based approach to conserving the most essential — and at risk — breeding duck habitats: small wetlands. https://lnkd.in/gFyYVtCP

Indicator of the week: Breeding success of waterbirds This candidate indicator represents a pilot example for the common guillemot near Gotland and shows how the indicator evaluation works. The results show the species is in good condition in terms of breeding success, with a population growth rate increasing over three generations (74.4 years). The good status regarding breeding success points to favourable feeding conditions. However, this positive outcome is partly due to overfishing of cod, which increases the availability of small fish as food. Therefore, this indicator should be considered alongside other ecosystem evaluations. The success of this pilot suggests expanding monitoring of waterbird breeding success in the HELCOM region. https://buff.ly/3VpcWCz #HELCOMindicators #BSAP #HOLAS3
