Let’s talk hard data - Those hourly restaurant employees that I mentioned I talked to about what they need to feel like their owner/managers care about them as people? I asked them other things too. Only 33.4% gave their current/most recent job above-average scores around the level of support they receive at work. 26.7% thought the idea of their employers caring about supporting them at all was laughable. 80% said that they would work harder if their company cared more about them as a person. 86.7% said that with multiple job offers on the table, the company whose core value was to support the well-being of its employees would be their top choice. And 73.3% said that they would leave a job they already had faster than you can say side work if they knew that their well-being would be a top priority at a new company. So if recruitment and employee turnover rates are costing you time and money, it might be time you look at how you’re treating your people. Or take a step further and ask them how you’re doing. What does the holiday season bring besides snow, Santa, singalong songs, and seasonal depression? (for those of us who won’t see the sun til April) Events and parties! Next segment: The Hospitality Industry What's worse than having a little too much fun at your company holiday party? Not having enough staff to adequately service it. The hospitality industry has always struggled in finding and retaining quality talent. The pandemic did not help the cause. The National Restaurant Association, featured in an article written by Open Table, states: "Staffing in the restaurant industry was 3.6% below pre-pandemic levels at the start of 2023. That’s 450,000 job openings compared to 2019. Meanwhile, 62% of operators say they can’t staff up to meet demand, and 80% say they have a hard time filling open positions." As a business owner (or a worker too), what can you do? Open Table suggests several ideas: 1. Use technology to your advantage 2. Attract top talent 3. Track performance Check these out in more depth at the link, because simply paying people more is undoubtedly easier said than done. Strong training programs and on-demand pay can help! Because to some, time of pay is sometimes more important than amount. Those in the industry: there is hope. It can come in the form of flexible staffing.

Labor has been and will continue to be hard to keep up with. What we tell our clients is dead simple: Think in terms of quarters: Each quarter, what are you doing to leave breadcrumbs each week and month to show you care about the financial success (hopes and dreams) of your team. Like the great lyrical philosophers of the late 90's Blink 182 screams: "She left me roses by the stairs Surprises let me know she care" Let us show you how you could avoid what is knocking at the door. "In absolute terms, job openings will be most prevalent in the limited-service sector. With turnover added to a 1.5% net increase in positions, fast-food restaurants will need to recruit 789,300 new hires every year through 2032."
