As of the most recent data available, approximately 2.7 million children in the United States have a parent who is incarcerated. This represents 1 in 28 children. The impact of parental incarceration on these children can be significant, affecting their emotional well-being, family stability, and overall development. It’s essential to recognize and address the challenges faced by these young individuals and provide support to both them and their families during this difficult time. Creative Corrections, LLC and Pitzer Family Education Foundation has taken this challenge on. In order to prevent these children from following in their parents' footsteps, we believe inmates are our most important resource. Inmates have donated $240,000.00 to the foundation and the foundation has awarded 190 scholarships to their children. We send out quarterly reports to participating correctional agencies indicating how much was donated, how the funds were distributed and what funds remain available. All funds donated by inmates goes toward scholarships. We not only welcome but encourage correctional facilities to participate with us. We also encourage companies doing business within the correctional system assist us by making donations to the foundation Working together, we can and will make a significant difference. pfefscholarships.org. creativecorrections.org.

Do you love origami? You can help someone else who loves origami too -- by buying this book for an incarcerated person via the Books Through Bars wishlist. And from now until Sept 28, your donation will be MATCHED in honor of Prison Banned Books Week! Here's the wishlist: https://lnkd.in/eZzRB95g I'm a volunteer with the small Philadelphia nonprofit Books Through Bars. Every year, we receive approximately 6,000 requests for books from incarcerated people. Our work responds to the exponential growth in the U.S. prison population, which has coincided with a decrease in funding for libraries, vocational training, and education programs within prisons. Many prison libraries are inadequate and inaccessible, while access to resources from the outside is limited by prison restrictions and inmates’ poverty. Many of the people writing to us have no other way to access books. Learn more about Books Through Bars: https://lnkd.in/e4rh4D8V And here's the book wishlist again: https://lnkd.in/eZzRB95g

XO Bikes, a London-based charity, trains former prisoners as bike mechanics, addressing the high reoffending rates linked to unemployment. People who secure jobs after leaving prison are much less likely to reoffend, making employment a key factor in successful reintegration. Supported by companies like Decathlon, XO Bikes provides skills and opportunities, helping ex-offenders rebuild their lives and contributing to reducing crime. The initiative highlights the potential of second chances to create lasting, positive change in both individual lives and the broader community. The world needs more charities like XO Bikes to help rebuild lives and create lasting, positive change. #SecondChances #PrisonReform #BikeMechanics #ReducingReoffending

At a time when those going to prison are hitting the headlines, it is worth reading this article about the approach to leaving prison and how the excellent XO Bikes is trying to rewire the economic approach to addressing the financial and social costs of reoffending.

Join The Ripple by visiting. https://lnkd.in/g4wVUffy - Make. A. Difference Important reasons why joining the ripple is important it not only impacts those in the system but those outside and indirectly involved. In-reach programs into jails and prisons aim to link individuals who are incarcerated with community service providers to address their needs before release and support their reentry into the community as well as assist in the habilitation while in incarceration. These programs often involve connecting inmates with primary care providers, identifying health conditions, and establishing care plans to address housing, mental health, communication and substance use needs. In-reach initiatives have been shown to improve housing outcomes, reduce recidivism, and support successful reintegration into the community. 📢The Big Issue recently reported that "women are asking to stay in prison beyond their sentence because they don’t have a home to go to." For years, women’s charities have been advocating for a significant reduction in the number of women sent to prison, highlighting how being in prison can worsen the situations of those with mental health issues, domestic abuse histories, or those facing homelessness upon release. The charity Women in Prison is urging the UK government to focus on prevention rather than criminalisation. A recent article by the LA Daily News speaks on the effectiveness of reducing solitary confinement, shifting away from isolation while focusing on interaction-based interventions. According to the article, "studies show prolonged solitary confinement increases the risk of mental illness, self-harm, and recidivism.” However, “reducing solitary confinement could lead to up to $400 million dollars in savings to the state", where the funds could be directed to other programs that may prove to be effective. Could a more restorative approach be the answer? Let's discuss in the comments! More than three out of every four individuals released from U.S. prisons are re-arrested within five years. Why is this revolving door scenario so vicious among those who are or have been incarcerated? When released, individuals often have strict probation guidelines to follow. However, they also face difficulty accessing housing, employment, and treatment for mental health issues. Because of this, it can feel like an overwhelming and unrealistic goal for these men and women to get the help they need, establish a life outside of prison, and build stability for themselves and their loved ones. Many changes need to be made in this system to HELP inmates leave prison and start a new life away from crime with support and understanding. That’s what we’re here for! Our mission is not only to humanize prisons on the INSIDE, but also to support individuals on the outside who need help and guidance. #community ##Nonprofit #donate #community #prisonreform #dogood #givingback #makeadifference
