🌟 Had an amazing time at the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST) Career Fair on 10th May! I was grateful every minute as it was incredible meeting so many inspiring women and soaking up all the knowledge and insights the event had to offer.
✨ Here are a few key takeaways that really resonated with me:
1️⃣ Don't be afraid to speak up! 🗣️ Through the inspiring speech by Susana Rodriguez, I learned that we should not be hesitant to take up space: I sometimes struggle with this, but the speech was a real eye-opener. Your opinion matters, finding a company that appreciates your inputs is crucial.
2️⃣ Success is all about connections and continuous learning! Reach out, schedule those coffee chats, and always strive to upskill.
📝 Some valuable job-related tips I picked up:
1️⃣ Post on LinkedIn & Build your brand: I know it can feel awkward at first, because same!! I was in the same boat, overthinking what to post and what not to post, that I ended up not posting anything. But here's the scoop: Recruiters appreciate authenticity over perfection. Example: They don't mind if you don't win a hackathon, but they would just love to know that you participated (I was so surprised to hear this!). Share your journey, even the imperfect parts!
2️⃣ Recruiters want to hire people, not robots: Hear me out now, imagine they're sorting through thousands of applications for one job. What makes you stand out? It's not just your qualifications; it's your personality. When recruiters see your profile and connect with what you share, you become more than just a name on a resume. Posting on LinkedIn lets them see the real you, making it easier for them to reach out. So, it's not enough to just have a profile; make it reflect who you are.
3️⃣ Network with people in your desired role: Sure, connecting with a recruiter is great, but insights from those already in your dream job? Priceless.
There were plenty more nuggets of wisdom shared at the event, but these are the perfect starting points to help you (& myself) land that job! 🚀
Big thanks to the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST) for orchestrating such a valuable Career Fair! It was incredibly beneficial, and I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to attend.
