City of Hope is headed to SXSW! Thanks to your #PanelPicker votes, City of Hope has been selected to lead a #SXSW 2024 panel. Our “Cancer Innovation and Those Who Are Left Behind” discussion will be hosted by Harlan Levine, M.D., City of Hope’s president of health innovation and policy, in collaboration with Los Angeles Times columnist Anita Chabria and Ysabel Duron, The Latino Cancer Institute founder and president/executive director. Together, they’ll tackle three important questions: - What are the most important rights a cancer patient should have at diagnosis? - How can we reimagine our health system to be designed about what patients value? - What are the existing barriers exacerbating health inequity that can be addressed to close gaps between innovations and those who can access them?

It addresses the critical issue of racial and socioeconomic disparities in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) treatment. Highlighting the evolution from chemotherapy to advanced treatments like PARP inhibitors and immunotherapy, this work emphasizes the need for personalized, culturally sensitive interventions. Diving deep into the challenges faced by minority populations, especially African American women, it calls for a holistic approach to health equity. Cancer affects millions of people each year – we often all know someone who has lived with cancer, or had a family member or friend with cancer. It doesn’t discriminate, which is why collaboration across communities is more important than ever. Although we would like to have all the answers as a company – we don’t! Which is why partnering with other industry and patient groups is crucial. Partners offer insights that improve the work we do, for example strengthening clinical trial design to make more patient-centric or giving patients a powerful voice to inform health policies. Patient organizations should lead by example on diversity and inclusion in cancer care because they represent the diverse needs and experiences of patients. By prioritizing diversity and inclusion within their own organizations, they can better advocate for equitable access to care and support for all individuals, regardless of background or identity. ⏰ New paper alert: Meaningful consumer involvement in cancer care Have a read of this newly published paper that summarises the application of co-design in oncology? Thanks for sharing this, Anna Ugalde! The recommendations for researchers are clear and focus on three key areas: 1) selecting appropriate methodology, 2) recruitment of diverse consumers and other stakeholders, and 3) evaluating co-design processes and initiatives. Interestingly only 3 of the 51 studies included in the systematic review reported to seek stakeholder satisfaction/experience with the co-design process. Gathering feedback from participants is so important for learning how the process may have impacted them and understanding how to improve future co-design initiatives. We like to invite 'frank and fearless' informal or ad hoc feedback throughout the process so changes or improvements can be made as we go. We then include an evaluation survey and a reflective debrief session with stakeholders at the end of a co-design process.
