Championing consumer engagement in Victoria, within the Institute for Health Transformation at Deakin University.

About us

The Health Consumers Centre champions consumer engagement in Victoria. It is based within the Institute for Health Transformation at Deakin University. It builds on the legacy created by the Health Issues Centre which enabled consumer and community engagement in the health system from 1985 to its closure in 2024. We believe that by valuing and engaging with consumers and community members as equal and active partners, we can enable much needed and effective health system transformation. We work across all parts of the health sector to ensure health policies, services and research are shaped by the people that they are designed to benefit. We passionately advocate for and support best practice in consumer and community engagement. We provide training, facilitation and consultancy services to support and deliver meaningful and transformational change. Contact us at healthconsumers@deakin.edu.au.

🎥 Are you a cinema lover? If so, Deaf Victoria Inc. is seeking your help!   🎞 Deaf Victoria Inc. is gathering feedback on cinema captioning from deaf, hearing-impaired, and hearing people alike. The survey link is accessible to all hearing types, requires no typing, and can be shared with anyone you know who has something to say about captioning in cinemas. 🗒 Feedback from this survey will support Deaf Victoria Inc. to give diverse, meaningful feedback to cinemas about how people experience captioning on the big screen, working towards a more equitable cinema experience for all.   👇 The survey link will remain open for a couple of months, so plenty of time to share widely with your networks.   https://lnkd.in/eRtYv9Du

Thank you to the Agrifood Innovation Institute at The Australian National University for having us at the 'Sharing power – approaches to community engagement for more inclusive outcomes' session on Tuesday. Not even a last-minute flight cancellation could keep Alison from talking with great passion about this topic! Alison shared insights into the power of true coproduction to drive meaningful change. That means embracing wholehearted disruption, sharing power and creating safe enough spaces for transformational exchanges between different groups of changemakers - all with equally valued expertise.  Alison warned against a sole reliance on toolkits and templates to drive practice, and instead called for more emphasis to be put on developing fundamental skills in human connection through building authentic relationships, checking our biases and fostering psychological safety for others. The conversations got us thinking about how culture and context comingle to impact our capacity for meaningful engagement.  💭 How might we be agents of change in our respective institutions?  💭 How can we create cultural shifts that embrace new ways of working (knowing that might be uncomfortable and unfamiliar)?  💭 What ways can you start to share your power with others? We would love you to share your reflections on these questions in the comments.

❓ Your questions answered series... A. Our focus is Victoria-wide, and also on national issues in partnership with our state and territory counterparts. We recruit widely and select for diversity, including place of residence, social and cultural backgrounds, gender identities, age, and experiences of ill health, harm and recovery. We have also partnered with agencies to ensure we are hearing voices that are unheard or hardly heard. Two examples are the recent consultations we have undertaken in partnership with Deaf Victoria and Engage Pasefika, so we can connect in safe and meaningful ways with these groups by partnering with leaders in their community. Our intention is to have a mix of in person and online opportunities to work in partnership with members of the community, including us travelling to work with people in all regions, and channeling those voices and experience through all of our work. 👇 More questions answered here https://lnkd.in/gNnbfRKX

  • This week we attended the 2024 Australasian Forum on Person-Centred Value-Based Health Care (PCVBHC). We would like to thank Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV), University of Melbourne, and Sprink’s Global Centre of Excellence in PCVBHC for organising this event - the array of guest speakers provided much food for thought! 200 people gathered with representation from all parts of the health sector from hospitals to primary health networks, community health, research, industry, government and consumers.  There is collective acceptance that our health system is in crisis and wholesale transformation is needed. There is a growing momentum for any exploration of value in healthcare to be grounded in what matters to the people we are here to serve. We heard from international presenters about the systemic changes that are occurring abroad to ensure people are truly being placed at the centre of healthcare. We are here to support and enable similarly meaningful and impactful, large scale change in Victoria. Well done to Kathryn Elliott, Susannah Morris, Naveena Nekkalapudi, Helen Rochford-Brennan LLD and Sue Woodall – such strong consumer advocates. Your presentations, stories, thoughtful questions and demonstrated leadership were a powerful presence.

🗨 Do you know someone 18-20 years old that likes to have their say? Well, we have an opportunity for them to do just that. 💻 We are looking for people within this age bracket who are living in Australia, and have had some youth advisory experience, to join an online focus group that will inform a research grant. The research is about the impacts of alcohol on young peoples’ mental and physical health.  📨 This is a paid opportunity, so if you know of someone who fits the bill, please share this with them! ⌛ Expressions of Interest can be made online and will close on Tuesday 10th September 2024 https://lnkd.in/euc_uBhy

A typical day involves greeting people as they enter the centre, speaking with them, introducing our wellbeing programs, and providing assistance.

  • ❓ Your questions answered series... A. One of the many exciting opportunities about sitting within the Institute for Health Transformation is to grow a program of research and evaluation work that contributes to the evidence base for consumer and community engagement, in all its forms. We hope to partner with researchers in the Institute, many of whom have a passionate interest and skills in this area, as well as with other researchers at Deakin, and in other institutions, to explore the contribution we can make to the field more broadly. This extends to research into methods for engagement, examples of how it is done and the impact that it has when done well. 👇 More questions answered here https://lnkd.in/gNnbfRKX
