It was fantastic to attend the #CIMA Career Confidence event at Lancaster University last week, with a panel of experts sharing their experiences on advancing their careers in Finance. Although the advice given was for finance professionals, as a recruiter I took so much away from it that will help me in guiding the professionals I speak to every day. Here were some key takeaways: ⭐️ Show your personality through your CV. Consider how have you added value to businesses you have worked at through your passion projects. ⭐️ If you’ve joined a business and realised it’s not the right match for you, then have the courage to walk away, and find the role that is. ⭐️ Be curious. Build your knowledge through asking questions of those around you. ⭐️ Embrace technology. The roles within Finance are constantly changing with the advancement of software, and it’s best to lean into it and learn to utilise what’s available. Thank you Karen Young FCICM for chairing the panel, and giving confidence to audience to ask insightful questions, and to the panel for their advice - John-Paul Yates, Laura H., Steve Harrop, Richard Kenworthy and Catherine Humphreys, and Sue Hurrell for organising.

As an undergrad, navigating a packed job fair can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Even so, I decided it was worth a shot to see what insights I could uncover. I attended the NTU Banking and Fintech Recruitment Event last night. Despite recognising that the fair was almost exclusively tailored for penultimate and final-year students, I was still able to glean some valuable takeaways. Sure, a lot of the hiring info and company links provided were already available online, but the event made up for it with something you can't find online - the human touch. Interacting with representatives from Standard Chartered, UBS and Deutsche, I learned a lot about the various company cultures, such as "Never settle", "Do good" from SC, and the "People first" attitudes from Deutsche. Furthermore, I was able to ask them what skills were valued in an intern. Answers ranged from "A basic understanding of technical skills" to "Soft and leadership skills". Attending the event with my classmate Sricharan Bala, we had the opportunity to pick the brain of a final year student, Mike Chan. We bounced ideas of what firms were looking for in new hires, as well as sharing our stories of how we fell for the industry. Even though the event might not have been catering to my profile, I still maintain that it was a good learning opportunity. If anything, it has inspired me to stay committed to activities I am already involved in, including writing about relevant finance topics that interest me, and actively engaging in case competitions and joining finance clubs. My advice to others would be to assess whether an event aligns with your needs. If you are still exploring banking and finance as a potential path, these fairs have the potential to be an awakening. However, if you are already committed to the path, online resources can be just as useful and definitely more time-saving. Overall, I'm glad I attended the event and made the most out of it. It's a learning experience that I'll definitely remember as I continue plotting my path in the dynamic world of finance. #jobfair #undergrad #finance

With our inaugural ‘Careers Month’ coming to an end, let’s look back at some highlights from the month. University of Edinburgh Research Staff Careers Support Consultants (Darcey Gillie and Eleanor Hennige) ran a varied and packed programme of careers support to academic colleagues from across The University of Edinburgh. They held briefing sessions on Career Decision Making, Narrative CVs, and Recruitment Insights as well as 1:1 quick careers queries and Career Conversation written case studies. Emily Woollen (Academic Developer) also ran a PI Researcher Realities event on how to have Effective Career Conversations, as part of IAD’s new support for Principal Investigators. This event uncovered the realities of having effective career conversations between PI's and researchers. If you didn’t manage to catch any of our events this year, the following blog provides more information on the month with links to other blogs summarising each event. https://lnkd.in/e_b-wdmi Many thanks to everyone who attended our events. We received some lovely feedback from participants: “I gained a lot of different insights and methods for positive and effective career conversations in the future” “Lots of really useful advice and encouragement to explore different options for career development.” “Some insights into aspects of job search/applications that I hadn't previously considered” We look forward to running the programme again next year! 👋 #Careers #RecruitmentInsights #DiverseCareerPaths #ResearchImpact #ResearchCultures #ProfessionalDevelopment #CareerDevelopment #Researcher

✅ Following the success of previous events, and by popular demand, we are hosting our 8th Student Career Compass event on the 16th of October 2024. As previously, this will be both an in-person and online event, supporting students to make informed career choices; and I would be obliged if you could share the details to your students and encourage them to register. These are unique events and for context, we hit our capacity for in-person attendance of 250 quite quickly for the last event and had around 10,000 students participate virtually. ✅ Throughout the evening, students are invited to participate in sessions run by some of the UK’s largest and well-known organisations. Spanning a range of sectors, participating this year are the BBC, CBRE, Deloitte, FDM Group, Kier Group, NatWest Group (including NatWest Markets, the Investment bank), Rathbones Group and Trowers & Hamlins LLP. ✅ We are very excited by the breadth of organisations that we have participating this year, and they will share with students detailed insights into: A day in the life of a particular role and industry What career trajectories look like The journey of recent graduates and apprentices What direct entry routes are available What they look for in a candidate and how to make a strong application ✅ Those attending in person will benefit additionally from the market stalls that each organisation will be hosting and be able to have more personal one-to-one conversations with both their recruiting teams and their current graduates and apprentices. Students will also have the option to bring their CV in and have it assessed and critiqued by industry experts in our CV Clinic. This has proven to be a very popular service. ✅ The Student Career Compass website: https://lnkd.in/eKyFzvvr details the timings of all the sessions and holds the registration link on the Upcoming Events tab. For those selecting to participate online, the confirmation email will contain the zoom webinar link for the event. ✅ We will be starting the Interview Skills session promptly at 4.30pm, so are asking students that intend to turn up in person to do so from 4.00pm onwards or for those online, to dial in at least 5 mins beforehand. The market stalls will also be open from 4.00pm onwards. ✅ The feedback from previous events has been phenomenal and many students have described the event as life changing for them.

Letting the next generation of finance leaders know that finance isn't boring!!!!! Sometimes we accountants get a bit of a bad rap for being dull.. Grey cardigans and suits …. And just about crunching the numbers….. Not my network of accountants 😉 !!! Yesterday had the pleasure of once again attending a careers fair at our local high school. I had such great conversations with teenagers and parents about careers in finance. 👉 Different routes of education 👉 Different types of careers possible 👉 My own journey to qualifying and the opportunities a career in finance has opened - Some came to talk to me knowing they wanted to work in finance. - Some came just wanting to know more about it. - Some came because they wanted the haribos. A highlight was a parent coming to me after and saying – "thank you for taking the time to speak to my son – you really inspired him". 💙 Job done! If I inspired one young person to consider a career in finance then that’s a win! For those that weren’t sure… I introduced them to the Financial Wellness for Teens programme so they could learn more about their own personal finance journey and see if that sparks an interest for a career in finance. Grateful for the opportunity to be take part in this brilliant event once again. #futureleaders #careersinfinance #futureaccountants #financialwellness
