Incoming Nike Inc. CEO Elliott Hill could learn a lot from his counterpart at Adidas Bjorn Gulden. The Norwegian former footballer made Adidas nimbler and turned some of its sneakers, led by the Samba, into hit shoes. Nike desperately needs to do the same. But Hill should also take a leaf out of Gulden's book in another way. He should not miss the opportunity to reset sales and earnings expectations lower for the coming fiscal years, making them more realistic and reflective of the fact that it won't be quick and easy to turn around the Nike juggernaut. Nike laid the groundwork for this on Tuesday, when it withdrew guidance for the year to the end of May. But Hill should go further. It certainly worked for Gulden. He kitchen skinked Adidas because it had too many old Yeezy sneakers in the back of its closet that needed to be cleared out, after Adidas ended its almost decade long partnership with Kanye West. Nike isn't facing the kind of backlash that engulfed Adidas after Ye's antisemitic comments. But it is struggling to turn round its fortunes after best selling sneakers -- the Air Force 1, Air Jordan I and Dunk -- fell out of fashion. Getting all of the bad news out of the way would truly clear the decks for Hill and give him a platform from which to rebuild. Its certainly worked for Gulden. He did a better job of dealing with the Yeezy overhang and transformed the Samba into probably the world' leading sneaker right now, enabling him to constantly beat expectations. Indeed, if Hill follows his playbook, he had better make sure he outperforms too. #Adidas #Nike Bloomberg Opinion https://lnkd.in/gFTwkctN

Adidas: The German Shoe Giant Posted Its First #Loss In 30 Years. After years in the black, sportswear giant #Adidas has gone red. The German company posted its first annual loss in over 3 decades as the full effects of its breakup with Kanye West and his valuable #Yeezy brand continue to hamper the #apparel behemoth. The company revealed a €14M net loss for 2023 — a far cry from the €638M net income it notched in 2022, and even further from the €2.2B (~$2.4B) that it achieved the year before. Weak #revenue in the U.S., its second biggest market, is driving the decline, with #sales slipping 16% in 2023 — a trend that the 74-year-old company expects to continue this year as it battles with a glut of #inventory. When it cut ties with Kanye West in October 2022, Adidas still had some $1.3B worth of Yeezy shoes in its warehouses that it has slowly shifted over the last 15 months, donating some of the #profits to fight hate speech, and the company now finds itself in a transitional period. Soccer-player-turned-CEO Bjørn Gulden, who spent nearly 10 years at the helm of rival #Puma, set out a pretty understated roadmap slogan, saying that Adidas should be a “good company” by 2025 and a “really healthy company” by 2026. Nonetheless, shares in Adidas are up 55% since #Gulden took the reins and implemented his #turnaround plan. JSesko@meridianfinance.com 818-914-9271 #tradecreditinsurance

This is a Nike Box. I'm pretty sure everybody can recognize it. For sure not for the promise of offsetting carbon emission. But for sure people recognized it, for the font maybe. I'm sure because somebody stole the sneakers (Vomero wide-feet, so he must have been a runner, ah) from it and repackaged the apparel I had bought online. Couple of things: 1) thanks Nike for reshipping the running shoes 2) brand identity is a brand and business asset 3) sneakers are still very sought after category (at list by shippers)
