How can we bridge the gap in affordable housing? Florida faces a growing challenge in providing affordable housing for its residents. The State and Local Government Housing Trust Funds are essential in addressing this issue. Each year, we advocate for maximum funding from these trust funds to support affordable housing programs. These efforts are pivotal in enhancing people's lives and ensuring a strong return on investment for our communities. Our focus is on demonstrating the value of these programs to lawmakers and securing the necessary funding to expand their reach. Additionally, the Florida Hometown Heroes housing program offers zero-interest downpayment and closing cost assistance. This is a fantastic resource for many—let's spread the word. This is a great step forward, and I am glad the Administration is sounding the alarm on whats about to be the biggest financial meltdown in US history. The problem we are facing is the post-recession consolidation of corporate home builders now control over 90% of the US housing supply, and have pushed back on all legislation that is pro-affordable housing. Here in CA, we have a statewide mandate that no city is in compliance with. Huntington Beach recently lost their lawsuit against the state which will hopefully lead to more municipal compliance. We have what I call a "cycle of greed" going on in that these builders announce low-prices to get land deals with cities, then charge up to 3X the price because the market demand is so high. Constricting housing supply, driving up prices, and manipulating the housing market is a low blow. I am very proud to say our business is working directly with some of these municipalities on public/private land partnership deals where we get land at an affordable price, but contractually agree to keep our price points within the Affordable Housing Indexes. This has proven to be a very popular approach to the problem at all levels, and we are rightfully getting a lot of support for it.

On April 23, City Council will discuss the 2024 spring supplement operating budget adjustment. The budget funds 70 services, including the emergency services, parks, roads, trails, bridges, recreation centres, attractions, social supports, and transit that Edmontonians use every day. It also supports priorities related to community safety and well-being, transportation, affordable housing and homelessness, and energy transition. Like many households and businesses, the City is facing increased costs on many fronts. We saw that reflected in last fall’s budget update, and we have additional challenges to face now as we make the final updates to the 2024 budget. The Funds will bolster efforts to keep mobile home parks a sustainable source of affordable housing. Low-income households 80% or below the area median income living in Mobile Home Parks will be eligible for the program. This effort is another attempt of the City of Fairfield, California to address housing preservation and stabilization needs of low-income households in the city of Fairfield.
