My first publication is now out! It explores a novel method to quantify driver familiarity with roadways—a key factor in crash risk. In this study, we introduce a novel approach using GPS data from the DrivingApp, which tracks driving habits across different age groups. Our GPS-based algorithm identifies and categorizes unique driving routes, revealing insights into driving diversity and familiarity. Key findings: 1. Our algorithm achieved a precision of 0.93 and accuracy of 0.91. 2. For younger drivers, we found two groups:   • Low frequency drivers with low familiarity and high route diversity    • High frequency drivers with high familiarity but low route diversity 3. For older drivers, we found a correlation between driving diversity and various health indicators like depression and gait speed. These insights could enhance our understanding of driving safety as it relates to route familiarity and its connection to both physical and psychological well-being. The 2024 “State of U.S. Science and Engineering” report has just been released! This comprehensive report delves into key indicators that assess the status of the science and engineering (S&E) enterprise within the United States and illustrate the U.S. global position in multiple aspects of the S&E enterprise. The first section of the report describes the status of the U.S. STEM education system from elementary through the doctoral level and the STEM workforce, including the contributions of international students and workers. It also details the American public’s perceptions about scientists. The second section, on research and development (R&D), discusses the position of the United States among the top R&D-performing countries and analyzes patterns of U.S. R&D funding and performance among economic sectors and by type of R&D. The third and final section focuses on outputs of the S&E enterprise to provide insight into how the United States and other major countries and regions contribute to global knowledge and innovation. Finally, the report contains a sidebar with select indicators of national investments and capabilities in critical and emerging technologies.
