Friends and family sometimes ask me what I actually *do* for work, especially when I’m traveling. According to this A+ photo from Jason Smith, apparently not much! In all seriousness, Consero’s just-finishing event in Virginia has been all-out; this was maybe the one moment I had to myself over more than two days of meetings. If you’ve never been to a Consero event, you’re missing out. It’s not too big or small; the quality of the content is high; and most vendors aren’t too aggressive. My most important takeaway from this event is that legal ops hiring is starting to heat up, after a fairly long cooling-off period. This is great news because it means: ✅ More upward mobility ✅ More compensation growth ✅ More entry-level positions ✅ More respect for legal ops I’ll be giving a broader update on compensation trends I’m seeing in the coming weeks, but this is a very encouraging development for the industry. #legalops #legaloperations #compensation

It's officially the second half of Q1, so I'm here to spill the tea on market trends so far this year: - In the world of big law, there are mixed signals with pay raises happening alongside layoffs. Firms are still trying to cautiously navigate economic uncertainty in the markets. But strong financial performance results from 2023 are leading them to lean into hiring where they have real needs. - In terms of practice areas, there is surging demand in tax, L&E, commercial lit, employee benefits, and regulatory funds work. Energy, project finance, and IP are holding steady too. - Candidates getting the most traction and receiving offers are those without complications: few if any moves in their career, solid law school grades, already barred in their target jurisdiction, and subject matter expertise that matches the job description. Firms are willing to bend on prestige of firms and schools for solid, steady experience. - There is notable demand for more senior associates and counsel level (6-10 years’ experience) attorneys. Sometimes these associates have fewer options, as many firms look to pare back at that level rather than add. But shakeups and exits during the pandemic era have resulted in skill gaps. Some firms need attorneys who are already trained, can manager juniors, and will hit the ground running on day one without much oversight.
