Thrilled to share the remarkable appointment of Marlene Sallo, a beacon for those in disability advocacy, to the Dept. of Homeland Security's Disability Advisory Committee. A testament to the power of diverse perspectives in decision-making. Every voice counts, especially in spaces where they've been unheard! Grassroots nonprofit leaders, we learn a crucial lesson: representation matters. Every day you champion for inclusivity & representation. Consider this occasion as inspiration to double down on your mission. Is there a pain point you might be overlooking? In this political moment, it feels increasingly dangerous for social justice work to occur in identity-based silos. It's tempting to believe that injustices like anti-Black racism, antisemitism, and transphobia are unrelated. But justice isn't a zero-sum game. We all win when we're focused on dismantling white nationalism. Regardless of how we all feel about each other, white nationalists are laser-focused on excluding *all* communities that they consider to be "other" even if that means creating a world that doesn't work all that well for them either. To remain strategic and effective, we have to look into all the ways that oppressive systems are connected - regardless of which marginalized community is the target of the day. #behindthescenes #socialjustice #philanthropy #nonprofits

Educator | Empowering Mothers to Lead Anti-Racist Change | 30 Years in Youth & Community Development | Founder of Anti-Racist Mums | Youth Engagement Specialist | Community Innovator | Championing Social Change
How Are You Starting Conversations About Race at Home? As a white mother, I know how difficult it can be to start talking about race and privilege. My own journey into anti-racism escalated when my melanacious child faced racism from children of people I once called friends. It shook me to the core and made me realise that if I wanted my child to live in a more just world, that work had to start with me. For the last 30 years, I’ve worked with young people and families in community development, but becoming actively anti-racist has required deep personal reflection and unlearning. It’s a constant process. It’s not easy, but if we’re serious about raising children who are compassionate and inclusive, we need to model the behaviour we want to see. Here are 3 ways to start fostering anti-racism in your home: Start Conversations About Race: Acknowledge your privilege and talk openly with your children about race. Diversify Your Family’s Books & Media: Include diverse voices and stories in your home. It normalises diversity and broadens perspectives. Challenge Racist Behaviours in Your Circles: If you hear something harmful, gently challenge it. These conversations lead to growth. If you're ready to take the next step, download my free tips on raising anti-racist children. Let’s work together to create a more inclusive future for all children. https://lnkd.in/d5QCg-kj Right now, I'm fan-girling Jasely Molina. I think my enthusiasm scares other black women who don't know me, but it is what it is, and that's ALL that it is. I'm about that HYPE LYFE, like Erin Gallagher. One of the reasons I engage and repost Jasely's content is something she said a few weeks ago about the global malaise engendered by the Pandemmy. The gist of it was: "The status quo is behaving like we're all just fine after being locked down and set back for two years. We are not. We are all hurting in some wise, no matter how well we came through it." This story typifies the point she so saliently made. A veteran mom gets evicted, and what does the school district do? Put her kids out of their current schools. Kick her little girl off cheer squad. Further tear their lives apart. Eviction is traumatizing. Your kids blame YOU, sometimes. They're too young and unformed to see it any other way, until they grow up--sometimes not even then. They're destabilized, traumatized, and then MARGINALIZED by systems and processes that are supposed to nurture and support them. What has happened to our American Spirit? The one where people helped each other, and looked out for each other, and made sacrifices for strangers? What happened to "There but for the grace of GOD go I?" There's a whole structure in place to MONETIZE MISFORTUNE. Once those kids got into the system, SOMEONE GOT FUNDED TO KEEP THEM THERE. Mom is now on the Outcast's Hamster Wheel, running and running without getting anywhere. She is demoralized, embarrassed, ashamed--and now she has to FIGHT with the administrators of her children's school, too. There is a bigger financial incentive to maintain a core constituency of the down-and-out here in 'Murrica, and WOE BETIDE if circumstances cast you into that lot. If you have no friends or loved ones to help you out, it is a Sisyphean endeavor to make it out of the HOLE. Surely there is a veteran's organization willing to help. Maybe I have enough juice here on LinkedIn to get this post in front of somebody who'll DO SOMETHING!

"In truth, both multi-generational wealth and poverty depend on a byzantine system of laws and policies that favor the status quo—and uphold centuries of racial discrimination." In this piece, Shanelle Matthews, Communications Director for The Movement for Black Lives, exposes the false myth of US meritocracy and lays out how Black people have been both historically excluded from social safety programs and denigrated when they gained access. #SocialSecurity #TANF She explains how we can and must stop these harmful narratives and move towards #economicjustice + a real safety net for Black Americans. This includes workers’ rights, investment in Black finance, and #communitycontrol of resources! #ParticipatoryBudgeting #democracy This article is part of a 🔥 Nonprofit Quarterly + The Movement for Black Lives series about the intersection of racial and economic justice. Make sure you read them all! https://lnkd.in/eYzCUbU8

⁃What if your nonprofit board changed your job responsibilities without telling you? ⁃What if your nonprofit moved headquarters or your board decided to dissolve? ⁃What if your board decided you need a co-director and then trim back your power and responsibility? ⁃What happens to your spouse if you die or become incapacitated on the job? ⁃What if your organization was falsely accused of something? Would you be thrown under the bus? Are you sure? Nonprofit executive directors already work for less money. We must be respected and rewarded with employment contracts to keep us secure. Our families, reputations, and careers need it. Join me tomorrow. http://bit.ly/FIREPROOFED
